Seeing the same thing:

1. Slow stream
2. Stop > start
3. Faster stream

I have valve didn't change something and we are back to using steamwatch(er) again :(
 
Slight slow down in the past hour, latency is low, but throughout is a bit shady. Hope this means your team is hard at work on the equipment
 
Streamed the rugby via SuperSport. All in all about 10 of those spinning circles throughout the Stormers and Bulls game. Most of them lasted about a second or two. Thanks CW. Keep it up.

Im on a diff isp and a solid one at that after lots of testing. The buffering you refering to is not on Crystal webs side but rather the CDN supersport/mweb/naspers group uses to host their stream. Its never been solid, no matter what isp.

Soz to go off topic but id thought id share that if anyone else was wondering if its crystal web

You might be right. Don't think I really know enough to analyse, but it was a good experience. The buffering was in most instances a fraction of second, but never more than 2 seconds. I would be very happy if that is the standard of SuperSport streaming for future events.

Its quite strange. It also seems to be popularity based. The 17:00 bulls and stormers game buffered x10 but I am atm watching the sharks game and i have not had a single buffer. I think the CDN cant handle the load of that first game

I've picked up similar results in the past and I'm sure you are spot on regarding the amount of people watching. In the past I could not even rejoin some events if I exited for some reason.

Ye i dont think the naspers group is willing to spend money on additional performance of the CDN. The users watching their streams arent considered paying valued customers. Whats new on the naspers * cough * greed group front.

CDNs play a massive role in the nature of performance and really is outside of any given ISPs control. A good ICT ecosystem is what is needed in order to deliver quality diverse services to all customers. We are very concerned with out ability to deliver streaming content, and it is an area which the business focusses on, but certain of the streaming sites unfortunately are incredibly problematic due to a failure to have any CDN at play at all. I am very pleased to see improvements in some of the domestic services for streaming.

You would expect a group like the naspers group, to find this ICT ecosystem. Considering their finacials at the end of the financial year and the amount of cash they have outside South Africa for foreign ICT development, they cant even provide their current customers (who are being overcharged for dstv) with proper streaming services to mirror that sattelite service they paying for.

To summarize, the fault of super sport streaming issues does not lie with a single isp like Crystal Web, but rather at the foot of the greedy machine that is the naspers group.

In essence yes, Naspers is really the South African firm that is failing to use its deep pockets to the benefit of building a robust and meaningful ICT structure - and who demonstrably free ride, and try to free ride on regulatory capture. There is an unfortunate tendency in SA to blame Telkom for all manner of things, and Telkom have failed this country, but the reality is a little more complex. The extent to which a particular line is taken by MWEB on LLU [which position really is to ask for Telkom to subsidize the dominant OLOs] and their aggressive blocking of innovation from Telkom Internet (which really should be thought of as any other ISP with its own challenges and comparative advantages) at the competition commission is truly retarding the prospects of breaking some of the deadlocks we are finding. It is greatly perplexing that MWEB falls operationally and structurally under Naspers "pay TV" division and that if we look at it holistically Naspers has massive exposure to foreign "dot com" bubbles [there exposure through Tencent] while really not betting on the SA market at all - despite the fact that we do have developers and are exporting more virtual service provisions every year. It really does appear that Naspers attitude towards the Internet is to compel Telkom to deliver the channel of distribution and Naspers to pull the revenue on every angle. There are exceptions, there was a major drive in the industry under a previous MWEB CEO, but ultimately Naspers more than Telkom has been the infringer of the consumer.

On the other hand if you consider Naspers in comparison to US cable operators who are currently making inroads to undermine the very fabric of the Internet it may be premature to grab your pitchfork.

Ye unfortunetly i am not even going to compare to other countries. With google handing out FREE 10mb fibre in some areas i feel the gap is too far to bridge. Whether they have their own Telkoms that run amok or not.

I just feel Naspers group takes R700 a month from normal South African house holds for tv, but that cant provide proper streaming for 2 games 4 times a month on a single channel. Its absoluut greed. Its not about you and I as paying customers anymore. Its not been for a while. Its about Naspers Vs the world and they dont care who they stepping on, on the way. Whilst their directors pull excessive bonuses.

They robbing South Africans of their right to paid to services. Whilst their propaganda is that Telkom is the enemy.

I have had my share of it when a Mweb call centre marketer (which i heard out because i feel for these guys doing their work to earn a living) told me that objection to their prices are unfounded and that I must continue to shop at shoprite, and if i changed my mind and felt like shopping at woolies that i must call them. Right there I lost all respect for them.

My call centre experience aside they are still screwing me eventhought I am a paying customer.

So now I wonder, lets say the mark on a 4mbps account is 250GB, and I reached that with 90% streaming and 10% browsing / updates, will I also be shaped? Because there is a big difference in real time services vs nntp/p2p downloads. I also like to download the odd app or game via nntp at times, but not to often.

first rule of nntp is you dont talk about nntp.

Lol, nah it's all SD. But my daughter is on the 40" tv with a android stick with XBMC, Youtube and Netflix for choice, wife stretched out on the couch under her blanket with the tab and me in my smallish man cave on the laptop. And yes we do spend a lot of time together as a family, in case someone throws the spend more time with them instead of streaming the whole day card lol. Anyway we reach 200GB most months, here and there 160GB, so without trying we can reach 200GB, 250GB when I do updates and a bit of gaming.

Gaming doesnt use much either i have a 10gb capped account for gaming (need that ping) though if cw fix is good enough might cancel it
