I have a ridiculous backlog, but i've done the maths and throttled that queue down to levels that I would expect to see if things worked perfectly...

I wouldn't classify it as a problem yet some people had a massive backog for having unusable packetlloss most of july and august....you can miss alot of interwebz in 2 months

I only used about 30 gigs for that and that was on my AH capped account...

The rest I acquired on my Temp IS account when it was active *shrugs*

..surely you don't have hundreds of gigs of backlog :erm: :D

I honestly think CW should scrap the last 2 days statistics! everyone seems to have cleared their backlogs in the past 2 days, those usage statistics would be so wrong!

Sure, as long as it's not mine :D

Hopefully the fact that I am not getting through on the phone in the last 15 minutes is an indicator that they are actually doing some work

What is needed is a mechanism to "burn down" the exchanges serving execs of Telkom as an escalation of last resort ...

you must be downloading HD content and the internet!

Reading some of the comments posted and it sounds like there's several people who are misbehaving. Come on people, CW asked nicely to not abuse the unshaped accounts

There is massive traffic being pushed through since going unshaped. On average more than 40% of all customers all running at full line speed consistently, and capacity has been consistently breached, which increases contention on the network.

At current usage, unshaped is not looking a viable product, although we understand that customers were going through a backlog so we're hoping everyone will now tone things down somewhat and revert to more normal levels of usage. This isn't only time-based though - remember we're focusing on home users for the time being, so our "off-peak" is actually the opposite of what you'd expect. :D

To put it into perspective, compared with shaped accounts, traffic has increased around 600%. But overall we've found that this is predominantly made up of a small percentage of users, which is in line with what one would expect to see on a network, and is also why ISPs often have their hands forced to introduce policies to curb this. An ISP cannot simply increase capacity on a whim, and it's also incredibly expensive in the current IPC environment to do so.

We're trying to get this balance perfect on our end. But it will always be a case of not being able to please absolutely everyone, all of the time.

As an example of how this test has changed user behaviour, we have been closely monitoring the total number of connections made from automated downloads and torrents (which accounts for the vast majority of traffic on a network). Even with the issues we had, we could ascertain a peak and extrapolate numbers. Since the unshaped trial began, the number of connections made overall on the network to automated downloads and torrents has increased by around 550%. And is now on average more than the predicted peak would ever have been. This is a case of users changing behaviour.

Some customers are whacking their lines for hours and hours on end with automated downloads. We don't view these customers as abusers at all. We don't like that term. Using the net appropriately for your needs is never abuse at all, and should never be referred to as abuse, but it does indicate that these customers are not on the correctly priced package - this is the reality in SA internet, I'm afraid. Any relationship should be mutually beneficial - customers happy with a service should will their ISP to be successful, and likewise an ISP needs to ensure that customers' expectations are matched with appropriate products. What our venture has shown is that there is probably no single account that will keep everyone happy - there needs to be sufficient product and pricing range and versatility in an ISP's proposition to ensure that a customer is always on the correct package for their specific needs. This is shaping how we are going to sell our accounts in future - it's time for transparency on that front - none of this: "this package is good for downloads, streaming, browsing" if it's an entry level product. That's too vague, and ends up with customers on the wrong accounts for their needs, ends up with unhappy customers, and ends up with network management issues as well.

Bottom line is that overall usage is incredibly high, and as a part of our commitment to transparency with our customers, we ask that you try to keep your usage lower than what it's been over the last few days since going live with this. Nothing massively drastic. Just question whether maintaining a persistent queue of 5 full HD DTS torrents is acting responsibly or not. Or whether falling asleep with Netflix full HD running all night is responsible. Or whether changing your Sickbeard queue from SD to HD because you now get better speeds is responsible. Small things - we set the theme of the email out as "green" to imply that there's an element of responsibility among everyone, and we likened it to being environmentally conscious in the hope that this theme may stick. It's akin to not switching on all of the lights in the house and leaving them burning just because Eskom say we're not near load-shedding warnings yet.

You certainly didn't.

:D

I know how to normalise data. :D

And it certainly requires some normalisation now. :p

I think I exceeded my daily average usage just trying to catch up on this thread.

Should the ping to EU be better now that it is unshaped? I tried playing a Fifa 14 game last night with matchmaking set to Southern Europe, but it was unplayable and lagging all over the place on CW. Switched to my free WA account and it was smooth like butter.

Way to go guys! You just messed up any chance of us ever getting an unshaped account at the current pricing! Good going morons! And I haven't even used the internet at all this month. Fsck sakes, do people really not understand the phrase "please don't download the internet".

Lag should be far better and very stable now. There are no known issues in Cape Town at the moment. Did you perhaps reboot your router after switching accounts (which is always advised) and/or flush your DNS? Often these simple steps can resolve issues on all accounts. It's often a case of switching accounts, router rebooting, and customers thinking that the ISP was to blame. I'm not saying that this is the case here at all though - more an FYI.

Picture will definitely change when the backlogs are all done. How does one check usage on CW accounts?
