I don't know about DVDs/blurays, but I can assure you that the local CDs are not a copy of the imported ones (there may be exceptions). I can only assume that the overseas distributors and the local distributors have no connection, and they each mix their own versions from the master recordings.

Edit: If anything the counterfeit ones will be direct copies. There must be a licensing issue preventing the local distributors from copying the overseas ones.

Actually, they are locally pressed. Most media is. This was confirmed to me by a guy who owned a DVD rental business.

Remember way back in the CD stores you had special labels on the imported ones as well.

What do you mean by mix? I can copy an existing CD/DVD/Bluray on my home computer with free software. Re-mixing something would require skills and expensive software/equipment. So I'm still unconvinced that anyone is pushing bad quality DVDs/bluray to SA. Its literally more work to produce an inferior product.

there's three huge local presses I kno of pressing them in SA. (sony/emi, cdt and cannot remember the other ones name).

they actually go to quite a bit of trouble to produce an inferior version - but its not a South Africa issue - and it has been an issue since at least the Super Audio CD release and a decision was taken on standard broad consumer distribution channels to use an "entertainment system" benchmark and skim off on quality. The local pressings in SA are only off master releases that are sampled to entertainment systems whilst imported CDs are pressed off high quality sampled masters, ostensibly this is because of the limited size of the market and the "higher costs" in running a press for higher quality audio.

Its a very good example of the ****edupness of the record industry. As you put it work is done to make an inferior product - but this is so that the market can be separated with presses working essentially as screwed over franchisees. Moreover it acts as a great incentive to abstain from purchasing CDs ...

I'd word it a little differently - nothing inferior about the presses (or inherently the pressings), but rather the master which is made available as part of the licensing process

What I mean by "mix" is taking all the audio channels, adjusting the gain on each channel and mixing them down to 2 channels (for CDs). Yes it may be more work to produce an inferior product, but it may work out cheaper than the licence fees for using their data.
Just my 2 Zim dollars worth.

Played on and off today, maybe 2 hours in total, solid green the entire time, what a pleasure, had one dc at the end of a rift but think that could have been related to my line issue, as my son was bitching upstairs about crappy internet at the same time, lasted about 5 minutes in total

I have been impressed now that my issues have been ironed out.
Streamed 1080p last night without a hitch.
 
Anyone downloading NZBs using grabit? Im getting a 502 connection error. When changing accounts to afrihost and changing my server details, it works perfectly.
 
In the last few days I've switched ISPs a few times and rebooted my router a few times, and I have the same CW IP address. Do we have static IP addresses?
