Seeing that off-topic is the new normal here, any advice for a point-to-point wifi link over 300m (actual distance 270m according to Google Earth)? My mom-in-law's place has a perfect LoS from a mate's house, so I'm hoping to setup a link from his place to hers for wifi access. She doesn't have a landline, so DSL is not a possibility.

I have a spare Zyxel WAP that I can install at her place. Just need the wireless link. This looks like it may be the solution, but I'm not convinced that I've not missed the point somewhere (or that it's not complete overkill):

TIA

Yep, I have one at my place and another at my daughter who is about 600metres away from us (They are actually Ubiquity). A couple of power lines, but she gets quite comfortably about 8Mbs via the speed-test. Should work fine.

Thanks Patrick. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Only a pleasure. We used google earth to give us the basic compass bearing, and then one person sat at the computer (They do have onboard signal strength metres though) with the other on the cell untill we got the strongest signal, and then repeated the other side.

I set my side, the side with the Internet as the Access Point and the other the client.
DHCP is a bit iffy over the wireless, so I gave them a fixed IP range for their gadgets (192.168.31.40 -> 49). That seemed to work the best.

Holy balls latency is massive on local games right now.... Will send support a ticket soon.

One aspect (of many) that I enjoy about CW is the candidness of the CEO(s).

Most ISP representatives on this forum tend to have a stick lodged somewhere, and heaven forbid they try sound less like a robot.
Sure, I can understand maintaining a professional front on a forum, but dealing with DJ and Paul is a welcome change from the Rep Clones. Not saying unprofessional, but human :)
Hmmm, you left out Shaun's name :p

So getting Old Mean Bastid to change his nic to Old Happy Fella, just due to service received from CW would result in said support member becoming a director?

are you an optimist by nature, or do you sometimes just dream of the impossible?

:p

Nice Antenna. I would obviously prefer to have 2 of the same devices, but you can first buy one and try with the Zyxel WAP.

EDIT:

I only see now that the Zyxel WAP is a router lol.

Using their forum names ^^

I know Shaun is DJ :P

Anyways, fantastic rapport on this thread, fantastic latency in games, fantastic download speeds so far this month.

I even cut back usage, would love to know if I am within "thresholds" now, I can has usage stats? That email I get hasn't budged off 35GB lol...

I think the Data Usage portal is still in /dev mode, though I'm not sure.

Will fire a mail off :D

Your reply got me thinking that I'm on the wrong track, and I've just realised how confusing my question will be to those that actually know what the heck they are talking about (meaning you and Patrick). I thought I needed two of these - one at each end (effectively a very expensive long distance ethernet "cable") - with a WAP at the receiving end to create the access point for the local devices to connect. Actually, all I need is one of these, as it is the access point. Found this page by someone that had installed a similar setup.

So, I'll just need the Ubiquiti NanoStation and the (supplied) PoE injector (and some mounting hardware), and we'll be sorted.

Thanks for setting me straight. Now to go boost my shares with the MIL. :)

Those latency issues were probably Valves ***** servers acting up again, all is well.
