too lazy to work back through the thread, what's the fascination with these routerboards?

Control! Set bandwidth limits per device or service, etc. Automatic 3g failover. Multiple adsl accounts for different traffic. Oh and mine will have a 1000mw wifi transmitter which I have Dr evil plans for.

Please note that due to maintenance and upgrades our live support will be offline until tomorrow 10am. Apologies for any inconvenience. Support via email is still available, but will be slower to respond than usual while we are going through the maintenance process.

1. You can leave it on without rebooting the RB for +- 1 year (well until theres a powercut, so I never reboot it I rely on eskom to do that.
2. You can manage your network properly and queue your network traffic, ie give streaming, gaming etc better network priority.
3. Acts as a DNS Cache aswell.
4. If you get a RB with wifi, you shouldn't need to buy any AP's.
5. A whole lot more, too much to type out, anybody else care to add to the list.

Very happy with the streaming on this account. NHL Gamecenter is streaming perfectly in HD without issues. Unfortunately it seems that it is not good enough for Playstation now though.

DD-WRT on a suitable piece of hardware does the same, no?

Not to anywhere near the kind of fine granularity...

DDWRT is kind of a sledgehammer whereas the RB can be a sledgehammer whilst also being a scalpel.

It's 2.4 ghz not 5,but is 1 watt so it will burn through all the other aps in randburg ;-)

ah okay, I've got DDWRT installed on my TP-Link and converted another lightning damaged TP-link into an extender also using DDWRT, I'm pretty happy with my network and the way it runs, guess you guys have different needs :)
