Hi friends,

Pre-RICA days we made use of old-gen Vodacom SIM cards that had 2 separate numbers on it. 1x Voice Number & 1x Data Number.

We used these in GSM modems connected to generators which allowed us remote access to the data numbers via dialup connection & it also sent out sms notifications on one of the numbers.

Those SIM cards with the 2 different numbers (voice/data) are no longer available and I cannot seem to find out which type of SIM card / Service to make use of in its place.

According to ocleroux the dialup data SIM's uses a 'CSD' older tech to communicate and this needs to be specifically requested to be enabled on the SIM card. We have requested this from vodacom but they tell us that is it enabled by default on all new 64k cards, but I think they're referring to 3g/gprs/edge connectivity. Either way, it doesn't seem to work though.

Using SCADA Software I can dial the SIM and there is a connection (verified it on site by checking the GSM modem as well) but it requires the CSD data side to communicate, which it's not doing.

Is there a specific SIM card that I need to order or service that I need to activate?

Any assistance/input is greatly appreciated.

I have Vodacom SIM card (quite new) and it is CSD enabled. For Huawei modems you can verify it in Mobile partner (I use generic version 11.302.08.01.539) going to Tools -> Diagnostic -> "Network status" tab. When you see "CS Network - Registered" it means you can dial CSD (HSCSD) connection. You can verify it using AT commands too.
However it doesn't mean your SIM will reaceive incoming CSD connection, as it is normally blocked on the network. This is what I have heard when I was interrogating it with MTN.
I guess, it is the same mechanism as in the case of receiving mobile fax, so perhaps you should talk to the rep asking to enable fax services, but make sure it doesn't go to the mail box.

Hi , you can pm me the number and i will see if the SIM card has been provisioned for the CSD service or not , if not i may be able to do the activation.

rehd, I think you're right. We communicate via dialup modem @ 9600bps. I didn't know there was a fax option. Thanks!

Hi All

I see that this post was replied to a very long time ago, but I am siting with the exact same problem....described above.
I have phoned and talked to various Vodacome representatives and they dont have a clue to what I am reffering to when you talk about a CSD data number.

Please update this post and clear this issue up once and for all.
Currently to date, Does the sim card have two numbers?
If the sim has only one number what feaures on the sim card need to be provisioned for so that CSD enabled?
What is the procedure to follow regarding CSD. What department do you contact and speak to at Vodacom?

Must the sim be in the unrestricted apn to allow for the incoming data call? I recon this shold not be necessary, but I want confirmation.
