Oh my word these cops are scum! Got a fine outside my own house in a suburban street for parking the wrong way round (ie facing oncoming traffic). Bastard couldn’t find anything else wrong since its almost a new car so slapped me R300 bucks for that!

I can just imagine how they going to milk the tourists when they get here for the SWC.
UK and Europe don’t have such stupid rules – you can park any way you like as long as you in a legit parking bay. Whats worse is the fine will go to the car hire company and they will just deduct from the guys credit card a few months later leaving him wondering wtf?
 
Dude... why didn't you just park on the right side of the road?

I've done it too and I was fined too - they are doing their job - get over it!

Yes I know. I was at fault, but only cause I live here. But it's a wide road and really what difference does it make - the car still takes up the same amount of space no matter which way round its parked.
My point was rather that the poms won't be aware of this rule & will get fined left right and centre.

It was still a scummy thing to do in a suburban street since there was no obstruction or anything.
They were just looking for revenue. Not trying to easy traffic flow, make it safer for other drivers or stop the taxi at the corner with 50 peeps in!

It sounds like complete bollocks to me.

I don't know the law / act in question, but it states something along the lines of " you can only park on the left hand side of the road in respect of your direction of travel in this place & the same way as you were travelling"........ *very confusing but still clearly a MAJOR offence*
 
I can understand parking facing on coming traffic if you're just pulling to the side of the road.. but in a marked parking bay?!?!?!

I'm gonna have to try find this law.. because at best I think its being interpretted in a very wide fashion by the police.
 
Except of course thats the UK...

I would like to see the SA law for this...
 
Ok, I've found it...

National Road Traffic Act, Regulations Section 304 and 305.... Except of course I think given a challenge in court it would take quite a bit to convince a judge that its a hazard to park in a demarkated parking space facing oncoming traffic.

But saying that.. R300 or whatever the fine is, is easier than doing the court thing... and thats what the cops rely on.

How the hell did you end up parking like that? Were you facing on-coming traffic when parking? IMO it serves you right for traffic violation. Man up and pay up.

Pulling out into on-coming traffic may be considered unsafe by most sane people:). Unless your car only goes reverse, in which case I would think the cops will understand once you explain the workings of your particular car.
 
Yeah I know... but then I pull out into oncoming traffic everyday leaving my house, and thats deemed totally legal.

I spose its easier to do a blanket law than it is to judge things on the fly.....
 
I would think most sane people would not pull out until traffic was clear in both directions.
Well that's what they expect from UK drivers. I guess we can't expect the same from SA drivers can we.
 
Yes I've been slapped with one of these fines as well.

It is a road law in the UK, but the police don't or hardly ever enforce it (from my pov).
Here they do!

That Golf is parked opposite an intersection which is also illegal, but you say that's a marked parking bay, I don't see it?
And the car on the grass, I thought it was illegal to park on the pavement as well?
 
That is completely screwed up parking. Oposite an intersection in a non designated parking area? I'm surprised they didn't tow you away. Sorry mate. How did you even think of parking like that?
