Can someone please point me in the direction of the law that says I can't park a specific way?

It sounds like complete bollocks to me.

Here it is:

Parking of vehicles

1) No person shall park a vehicle on a public road –

....

(d) (i) with the outside of any left-hand wheel thereof more than 450 millimetres within the roadway; or

(ii) where the public road concerned is restricted to vehicles moving in one direction and the vehicle is parked on the side of the roadway, with the outside of any right hand wheel thereof more than 450 millimetres within the roadway, unless such parking is permitted by an appropriate road traffic sign;
or

(e) which is less than five and a half metres wide unless the public road concerned is restricted to vehicles moving in one direction and such parking is permitted by appropriate road traffic signs.


Notice the wording, nothing to do with direction, all got to do with where the wheel is

cbrunsdonza.. I skipped the learners and went straight to the drivers...

I was more querying the direction of parking, rather than distance from the kerb. (as for the left hand wheel bit.. the left hand wheel will always be the once closest to the kerb regardless of the direction of the car, IF the person is facing the correct way, ie back to the traffic in the lane. )

I did find the regulation, but I still find it to be nonsensical in some ways... but understandable given the driving behaviour in this country.

Actually its a low common in most civilised countries, even if we disagree with it. But then again I brake at least one law on my daily commute on my bicycle with my flashing lights. I'll rather get pulled over and fined, than hit by a car because they did not see me.

But yes, I can understand why the law is in place but i def don't agree with it, esp since it is being used as a revenue generation stream (or at least another one) for the Metro police...

Ok, I've found it...

National Road Traffic Act, Regulations Section 304 and 305.... Except of course I think given a challenge in court it would take quite a bit to convince a judge that its a hazard to park in a demarkated parking space facing oncoming traffic.

But saying that.. R300 or whatever the fine is, is easier than doing the court thing... and thats what the cops rely on.

It's dangerous. For one thing you would blind oncoming cars, and you would be driving on the wrong side of the road.

Looking at the pics, if Arch makes a habit of parking there I wouldn't be surprised to hear the cops were responding to a complaint.

That's the way you normally get done for this offence in the UK.

It's dangerous because drivers approaching the parked vehicle don't have the benefit of seeing the reflectors in the brake lights of the parked vehicle.

I'm seeing alot of comments regarding poor light.. and those I agree with totally...

My initial issue is during the day when its def bright enough to see whats going on without the need for lights or reflectors, but I can understand why the law is in place even though I do still disagree with it.
