I received the message:

Thank you for subscribing to linkmobi/promo at R25 per week. To UNSUBSCRIBE SMS "stop" to 41765. T&cs apply.

When I called Vodacom, the company said that I am not subscribed to any WASP services.

Any idea what is behind this message?

I have heard of rumors, when you reply to this sms they know your number is active and working. So rather do not reply to it.

I received the exact same message about an hour ago. I responded to it, but thereafter realised that it could possibly be a simswap scam of some sort.

If someone knows what this is could please post information, and perhaps steps to take to prevent any form of fraud.

I hate companies that do this. And cell phone providers allow it which is worse.
The banks are soon to introduce a acknowledgement of a new debit order system so why can't cell companies.

We are supposed to have a double opt in system for WASPs to prevent inadvertently opting into something by mistake or by devious companies.

Direct debits are heading that way shortly.

I received this same message yesterday. I haven't clicked on anything yet.

@RPM, what are your thoughts? Can I delete it, or do you think there is a chance they will really deduct the R39 from my prepaid account like they are threatening to?

This is the company that's linked to the unsubscribe number:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. LogicSMS takes abuse very seriously.
The bulk SMS was not sent through our gateway, had it been sent through us, our SPAM filter would have blocked it.
However we have immediately blocked the customers usage of the shortcode, Anyone who has sent a message with the keyword 'stop' to 41765 should email spam@logicsms.co.za and we will process a refund.

When I use to work for an aggregation WASP I remember how the international guys would do the same. Use premium rated shortcodes to opt out, also do case sensitive matching or even mixed case (StOp).

Why any entity is allowed to send a message that requires you to reply with a sms to stop receiving their sh 1t is beyond me. These f e ckers are the scourge of society and are deserving of Venezuelan mob justice.

It is the fault of the government and the cell operators.

For years I have said that there should be an legislated automatic opt out in place. Unless you specifically opt in, using a double opt in system, you are automatically presumed to be opt out.

I have written countless, unanswered, letters to the cell operators regarding this as well as that most stupid thing called PCM. I sign up for a mobile communication service, not to receive advertising.

A note to any of you out there that work for ad companies, the best way to loose business is to sms me or have your ads in PCM messages. I will avoid your product at all cost.
