Cut Bandwidth Costs From Right Now...

Do 1 is R199 + R131 line rental = R330

Just DSL without a price drop for no voice, would be R152 + R131 = R283

So, 1gig international and 10gigs local is R47

Even without a price drop for no voice, that R47 can go towards an uncapped 384k such as the R599 Openweb package in August.

R599 + R283 = R882 for 384k uncapped...

can anybody confirm that you can have dsl without the residential line portion?

then we can all go to the prepaid telkom R120 per year special and just pay the dsl on top of that! it would rock! imagine DSL prepaid!

Mmm very clever... :)

I'm phoning first thing in the morning, to ask how the hellkom they can charge me for a dsl line and the analogue line, if I only want to use the dsl line.

There may be success in getting them to drop the double billing if enough people complain.

It is refusing me the opportunity to exercise my right to freedom of choice. It's unconstitutional. :)

lol, instead of throwing the constitution in someone's face who just "works" there. I'd try and get some answers re: prepaid voice line and paid for DSL line.

That option would rock for my folks as my dad prefers the prepaid (myself included) but had to switch to post-paid just for ADSL.

Ok, spoke to 3 different telkom 10219 operators to confirm...

...and forgot to ask about the prepaid...Too late now...Monday... :)

So, Do3 cannot be done on a 384k package. Only on a 4meg line. So, you have to have the ability to go 4meg at your DSLAM, or exchange. Also you should be closer than 5km to that DSLAM if you want 4meg.

If you cannot use 4meg, then you would waste money by going and buying the DSL 5gig package I mention earlier in this thread.

That's because telkom will charge you the R131 line rental, plus the R239 for 5gigs, plus R133 for the DSL service (capability). Total: R503

They say the best thing to do, if you cannot use 4meg speed, is to go for Do2.

This means you get 3gigs with your R133 DSL service fee, for R258. You then pay R131 for your line rental on top of that. Total: R389

So the cheapest option is to buy NO bandwidth from telkom. Just the DSL service (capability) for R152 and the line rental for R131 = R283

Then use the Openweb 384k uncapped for R599, + R283 = R882 for 384k uncapped...

Hmm, so line rental lives on.

So Do2 gets you a 384k line, ADSL line rental, copper cable line rental AND 3GB bandwidth for R389??

Phone Keoma...Although I'm sure he's working hard at making telkom rush the stuff they have to do for the uncapped service coming... :)

...at least, I remember reading that it was up to how fast telkom could get things done in August.

So has this been confirmed yet? Can we really drop the analog line rental?

Damn, I clean forgot about this issue... :)

The line rental stays. I'll phone tomorrow to ask if I can go "prepaid for the R120 per year." I doubt they'll like that. If it's even possible. :)

Not gonna fly - you can't get DSL on a pre-paid line. It's stated somewhere on Telkom's website.

I've made peace with the line rental malarkey - you can't very well have fixed-line DSL without a physical telephone line. Take a Closer2 & for R40 extra (over and above the R130 rental) per month I can phone my folks every night without it costing anything extra...

FFS can a mod just clean up this thread's misleading posts please.
It's really not cool to have to read through it all to find yet another pipe dream.
You should've kept the names of those darn call centre agents and reported them to their superiors.

There's no way that the analogue line rental will be dropped for the forseeable future.
At least edit your OP with the updated information you've "found" out Lightscribe ;)

The link you provided in your OP clearly gives a breakdown of rental costs: POTS line and DSL line.

Ta.

A saving of R47.

No pipe dream.

Cancel your bandwidth use with telkom.

Use only telkom line rental and get your bandwidth at the best prices over the next few months, as ISPs start dropping prices.

Just confirmed with telkom 0800375375, that you can cancel the voice option for your telephone line and use only the dsl option. Although that does not mean you pay less for the R131 Line Rental, it merely saves you from any costs related to someone using a phone on the line.

http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/dsl/cost_dsl_cost.html

NO boet.
That's still wrong and confusing at the very least.

First you say that you confirmed the voice can be cancelled - that is wrong/misinformed/misleading and untrue!
It cannot be cancelled.
There may be packages like the DoBroadband or Closer range(s) which bundle the two (DSL and Voice/POTS/Analogue) but it's still there.

Then you go ahead and contradict the first line in that paragraph with your second sentence.

Either you are stupid, or you have not spoken to a telkom employee. I spoke to them. A couple of times. The voice option can be cancelled. Ask them yourself. It simply saves you voice costs.

You are rather immature to post the way you did.

If you are as observant as you make out to be...take note of the bolded writing this time.
