Cut Bandwidth Costs From Right Now...

Ok LS, it's just down to the nitty gritty of the cost and the way in which the thread is titled and some of the posts that are in here.

Cancellation of a product tells me that it will not be there and that I need not or will not be billed for it.
Saving on cost for someone using the phone to make calls can be done with putting a PIN on the phone or simply not having a handset in the first place.

It's the word "cancellation" which is jumping out at me as misleading and(or)unneccesary.

Cancellation

can·cel·la·tion also can·ce·la·tion (kns-lshn)
n.
1. The act or an instance of canceling.
2. A mark or a perforation indicating canceling.
3. Something canceled, especially a released accommodation or an unfilled appointment.

ThesaurusLegend: Synonyms Related Words Antonyms
Noun 1. cancellation - the act of cancelling; calling off some arrangement
nullification, override - the act of nullifying; making null and void; counteracting or overriding the effect or force of something

If you can cancel it - you should not be charged for it.
Negating the use of the voice line is hardly mind blowing from Telkom IMO, seeing that it still has to be paid.

Yes, which I feel also. telkom says you can "cancel". Argue the semantics with telkom.

Which is why I mention it as an arbitrary bit of information.

Just DSL without a price drop for no voice, would be R152 + R131 = R283

So, 1gig international and 10gigs local is R47

Even without a price drop for no voice, that R47 can go towards an uncapped 384k such as the R599 Openweb package in August.

R599 + R283 = R882 for 384k uncapped...

BTW. Anyone reading this must realise that there is simply no comparison between capped Do1,2 or 3 with uncapped.

I am pointing out that one can cut the price of uncapped 384k to R882 all inclusive.

The nearest competition, like Axxess, sells uncapped 384 at R899 for satelite and R999 for fibre.

R999 + R199(Do1) + R131(line rental)= R1329 or R447 more than my suggestion.

Satelite anyone? R899 + R199 + R131= R1229 or R347 more.

Hope you have a few drinks with the money you save, people. :)

Except there two critical difference between Openweb's R599 product and Axxess' R999 product.

  • Firstly, if you have a 4MB/s line, the Axxess product downloads at 4Mb/s from 8pm to 8pm weekdays and all weekend. With Openweb you are throttled to a max speed of 384k.
  • Secondly, if you are over your threshold on the Axxess product, you are limited to 192k during working hours. On the Openweb product you are limited to 64k during working hours period.

If you have a 4MB/s line, I think you'll find the R400 difference well worth it. If you have a 384k line and go out to work on weekdays, the Openweb product is worth considering.

Having read all of this, I think I'll hold onto my voice service:
a.) So I can still call Telkom (for free) when ADSL doesn't work (my voice line always works, even if ADSL is down)
b.) If I should be disconnected (heaven forbid!), I will bet that someone at Telkom accounts/reconnections will insist I apply for a new service/voice before reactivating

For the saving of R47(?), I don't think it's worth the potential drama.

I think this has pretty much been covered, but in case anyone still doesn't get it:
One of MyBB's (and everyone else's) main issues with ICASA over the years has been that it's failed to call Hellkom on the fact that it double charges us for the same line.
You pay for phone line rental (R 131 or whatever) AND you pay for having an ADSL line, even though it's the SAME line.
You pay these costs whether you're on ADSL + Bandwidth, one of the Do packages, or ADSL through another ISP. YOU ALWAYS PAY FOR BOTH.
So yes, you can theoretically "cancel" the voice portion, but it won't actually make a difference to your bill, because you'll still pay your R 131 / month.

Has anyone worked out a theoretical maximum number of Gigs you could pull in (and upload I guess) using Openweb's deal?

64kbps*12hrs+384kbps*12hrs= + upload of 128kbps(during the day??)

Versus the oppositions 128*12+4000*12 or something?

Why are the costs not proportionately different?

Yes, there is no escaping the double billing of the line by telkom. Come LLU, in 2011...

Telkom says Prepaid will work for those happy with dial up. So one can get waya-waya at R130 per year and dial up internet for around R79 per month.

Of course, they then want the call rates of R0,75 per minute also, when you go online.

Dial up also constantly disconnects and thus costs you another R9-R12 each time you have to log in again.

So yes, telkom allows internet on prepaid, but at astronomical rates.

R9 - R12???? try infinite Rands, infinitiCall is not possible on waya waya, just another way telkom screws us, harder and harder.

I was really hoping telkom would drop the line rental, I am practically only using voip for calls anyways, works out cheaper using voip then telkom for local calls, can you believe it:mad:

Yah, was thinking about that myself.
If I didn't need low latency for gaming, I'd drop Telkom altogether, go wireless Internet and use Skype and cell phone for voice.
