I am considering to get myself an ADSL account at Cybersmart.
But I would like to know what the average pings are for Cape Town based people are when playing on SGS servers...

If anyone uses this service please let me know, I want a service that has pings and latency's on par with - Telkom:sick: - :D

Cybersmart is SAIX-based and SAIX = Telkom so the pings and latency will be the same as a TelkomInternet account.

hey, i use cybersmart and live in cape town. tell me what to ping and i'll gladly do it for you.

avg ping to saix.net = 24 ms (very consistent over last few mins)

Cybersmart - where is the catch?

Cybersmart offers R125 for a 3 gig account (384 line). This seems quite cheap compared to others- is there a catch that I am missing? Speedwise seems the same as Telkom - am currently using Webafrica prepaid and prefer prepaid that does not expire.

I'm aware of the hassle of them insisting on using their email address for all correspondence, but is there any other catch? Is R125 prepaid? And does it carry over to the next month - or is this only if paying extra (I think R10?). Please advise and share any experiences (am a 3 gig user...)

Cheers

Yes. There is a catch. You can't have another ISP.

Or use it at more than one location. Also, Cybersmart differentiates between line speeds with their bandwidth pricing, so 384 is cheap but from 1mb it becomes more expenisve that normal ISPs.

It's still fine for normal home use if you don't need lots of local content (ie you actually need a local only account for this) and it is cheap.

hehehe... not so sure about that ;)

FROM CYBERSMART:

"A large number of support calls are originating from users who are using us as a secondary ISP. They can't remember how to configure their router to put in our ADSL account, or their email does not work when they use our ADSL account or the accelerator product of their primary ISP is causing our account not to work optimally. All these support calls are as a result of some configuration or program used by another ISP."

EDIT: This is their reason for not allowing a second ISP

But must people do know how to configure their router, thus you can use the Cybersmart and when you reach your cap you continue on your Telkom account for instance...

According to ne there is no way of checking this... :D

Thanks for the replies.

So, to sum it up, one can get around the catch (ie they can not enforce it) by using an additional ISP. I assume one needs to manually reconfigure the router when switching (am new adsl subscriber but have changed ISP before, so does not seem too complicated).

That makes R125 for 3 gig a good deal, no? (compared to others). I assume it always depends on one's usage profile.
I am a consultant working from home who needs the internet - quite a bit international sites - and less than 150MB per day is ample.

Re local bandwidth - have seen various options of local-only content (assume internet banking, news sites etc.), is there a way of having both accounts simultaneously and filtering international content via the 3 gig account and local traffic via the cheap 10gig (or whatever )account?

Thanks for any assistance.

yes there is, by using RouteSentry.

Do a search on the forums for routesentry there is tutorial on how to do this.

This is one http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=39234&highlight=routesentry

cybersmart 3gig is cheap true. But they hardcap u once u reach 3gig. And if u do go over the cap "cause of the 24hour reset issue" , they deduct that amount from the next months cap.

TelkomInternet Saix account is 3gig cap too, but telkom is a bit more leniant. Yes its 3gig but they allow upto 6-8gigs sometimes. and each month u get a new cap.

I hate that word... CAP... its evil.. just my 2 ZIM dollars.

CAP CAP CAP :p

In Counter-Strike Source there was a clan called CAP... how annoying...:D

Has anyone tried one of these R125 accounts on a line faster than 384K?
