I got an 8Mb Fibre Afrihost package. A speed test indicates 20mb but I attribute that to a free upgrade during lockdown. With the package came a Nokia modem and a d-link 825ACG1 wifi router.

When I'm about 10m away from the router (not in line of sight but in another room with door closed) the wifi constantly disconnects and the wifi is very slow.

I'm looking to replace the router with something else. Any suggestions?

Move the router into a higher position in the room.
Move the router away from the wall slightly.
Set the router broadcast channel to automatic. Otherwise set it to the (non-overlapping) channels: Channel 1 or Channel 6 or Channel 11. (Try out all three and see how it goes.)
Upgrade the router firmware.
If you are replacing the router, get one that has detachable antennas. Then you can attach stronger antennas to it.

I have the same router and hardware revision, it works wonders, can you confirm your Firmware version?

I also had to due a bit of fiddling to get it 100% such as turning off band steering in the WIFI settings.

Also make sure on the 2.4 band you only use 1, 6 or 11 as the channel. Check for interference using apps on your phone or laptop such as wi-fi analyser.

What’s said above..

Orange interface = old stuff, not as great with somethings.
Blue interface newer hardware.

The new one you can play with power levels and check WiFi channel selection vs other WiFi in area.

Make sure your WiFi is not next to a microwave and Check thickness of wall.. if you can’t reposition it then instead of getting another device I’d opt for a Powerline adaptor with built in WiFi for other area.. just make sure it’s ideally on same breaker (turn off breaker at distro board and power will go off at plugs where u can plug in for best use case).

Reason I’d go for powerline stuff.. u gonna need it at some point and if the issue is physical area limitation u just spending money by replacing router with another that does the same thing. But do figure out if it’s the router.. u could return it if it’s faulty?

I've done as you suggested. Initially I had it mounted to the wall about 1m from the ground. The firmware is 3.0.6 which supposedly fixed the wifi issues. I had it on automatic channel selection initially. I changed it to the suggested channels but the wifi signal is still bad.

My firmware is 3.0.6 which was an automatic update about a month or two ago.

Comments in the link above indicate the router has inherent wifi signal problems. Hence, I just requested a suggestion for an alternative router.

If you are replacing the router, get one that has detachable antennas. Then you can attach stronger antennas to it.
Also, you could get a type AC1200 router because it has higher output power than most other types of routers, as well as simultaneous dual-range combined operation.
