Hey all!

So I bought a D-Link DSL 2750u Router a while back when I upgraded my account from 4mb to 10mb (uncapped). This was done to replace a relatively old TP-Link router which had relatively slow wireless connection. Anyway, the router worked great for 2 or 3 months, then for no apparent reason it decided to cap my down rate to 4mb max. I've spent countless hours on the phone with my ISP and searching online, but cannot find a solution.

Eventually, Telkom came through and tested the line and found no faults. They used their router on my line and got full 10mb with no issues. As my lifestyle is pretty hectic, I didn't have time to take it back to Matrix warehouse, as they will just send it off to god knows where and I will be without internet for over a month while I wait for them. So I plugged the TP-Link back in, and BOOM!: full 10mb line speed. Trouble is, my TP-Link crapped out today so I plugged the D-Link back in, and am back to being throttled by my router.

Short of it: Does anyone know if this is a setting issue, and if so, what do I need to edit/alter to get my full line speed back? Current firmware: Firmware Version: AF_1.72_R01 which I have not touched since I got the thing.

Thanks in advance :D

Check out Advanced --> Network Tools --> Qos Classification

Amend rate control as required.

Or in the same menu as above, go to Quality of Service and disable.

QoS was disabled when this happened. I'll check it out when I get home and see if the other two suggestions work, and will let you know.

Thanks for the response :)

Just do a full factory reset. I've done this enough times with the exact same router to know it takes like 15 minutes to get back up and running again.

If that doesnt work then buy a new router.

Ok, I did a factory rest and zero difference. I then went to QoS Classification and the only thing I can do on that page is create a new rule. The options and criteria in there are all Greek to me. Any advice?

Thanks!

I don't have any rules in there either. I thought you might have had a rule in there that was set to 4, and was restricting you speed.

I'd also suggest that you go into the statistics > ADSL page and post your stats here like: SNR Margin, Attenuation & Rate - both for upstream & downstream.

Do you have an ADSL filter installed? If you do, I'd recommend that you connect it to your ADSL modem without one to test. Just make sure that you don't have any other devices connected to your Telkom line (like telephone/fax/alarm).

Like last week I had an issue with my D-Link DSL-2500U where it connected at 6Mbps just fine, however the "Super Frame Errors" kept on climbing like crazy. A reboot of my modem somehow solved that issue and then my Internet was fine again.

Thanks for the responses guys :)

I tried with and without the filter but no difference. Even using the filter though, when I plug in a mates router to test I get full speed. It's just with this router that it caps at 4 mb.

I've attached a screen shot of my modulation settings as they are, and of the ADSL settings. With the modulation settings: I have no clue what any of them do, so I wouldn't know what to change :)

Thanks for the help, I totally appreciate it. Really hope that I can get this sorted!

Something is definitely not lekker with that modem's downstream portion! 53.0dB down, 18.0dB up!

Typically the Attenuation (signal loss primarily due to distance to Telkom DSLAM/exchange) of the downstream side is about 2x that of the upstream side. Like mine is 38dB down, 18dB up, and I'm synced at 6Mbps.

You can try to just keep G.Dmt mode enabled, but then your max speed would be limited to 8Mbps IIRC. Otherwise you'll just have to get a new ADSL/VDSL modem.

I tried to just keep G.Dmt mode enabled, but that decreased the speed even further. I then tried a random combination of settings after that but nada.

So you guys rekon it's a hardware fault then?

Could you swap your modem with a friend for a day and post the stats? Usually would consider it a line fault, but you said that it works fine when swapping out the routers. You are going to have to get a new router.

Could you also try plugging the router directly into the wall and unplug all phones/devices on the line and then post the stats.

Faulty router buddy. Mine also started having issues recently with all the load shedding. 2 of the lan ports are completely dead, and the others are temperamental. Have to use wireless to connect instead.

Damn. Will have to take it back then.

Thank you everyone for the help! Appreciate it :D

I'll check these tonight and post when I get home. Ended up buying el-cheapo router just so I can get my full line speed, but the wifi speed etc will suffer (I intend to keep this new one as a backup for when things go pear shaped).

So here are the stats from the new cheap-o router. This one has to be a temporary solution as it only has one lan port (I need more than one) and the wifi speed aint as awesome.

Thanks! :)
