I got one of these "collect at the PO" fines, and paid it fairly promptly, for the discount, via Internet banking. Now I get another one saying I haven't paid, and must pay the full amount plus a "courtesy notice fee" of R60.

I've tried emailing them, but their email server is not accepting requests , so now I have to go through the effort of sending them registered mail. I'm quite tempted to let this go to court

Don't they have a phone number? I would phone them straight away and ask them what the hell they think they are doing.

Just leave the fine...say you never got it, they'll have to refund it...

I"ve been flashed SO many times but NOT ONE fine ever makes it to my doorstep...

there is a number you can sms your id to you'll get a reply message stating whether you owe or not...don't know what that number is though maybe someone on here might know!

You really need to stop offering advice - read the AARTO act - if you ignore or don't pitch at court they can attach property in lieu of the fines.

People, traffic fines work according to the "honour system"

Say for example a city issues 1000 speeding fines a day. It's probably way more in reality, but just bear with me. Let's also assume a 5 day week, not 7.

1000 notices get sent out, and maybe 100 people pay.

Then the other 900 people get told to pay or they'll have to go to court. Let's say another 100 pay up.

You now have 800 people who need to be issued with summonses- BY HAND- and accommodated in a courtroom- per day. That's 100 cases per hour. It's just not logistically possible.

So they hold a "lottery" and summons maybe 100 people. If you're a repeat offender or were well over the limit, your chances of "winning" increase. Otherwise, you're pretty safe.

If they do issue a summons, you can still pay without going to court. Even if you lose the discount, it's worth the risk. They also don't try too hard with issuing the summonses. I had a tenant once who got a few after he moved out. Every time they asked for him I just told them that he didn't live there any more, and they never even asked me to prove that I wasn't him. They never bothered him when he renewed his license- they just canceled the fines.

f)cking idiots these aarto clowns.

I also got a ticket today (when i saw the "registered post" I knew it was a ticket). So I get the ticket.. R300 (R60 for "courtesy letter").

Problem 1. WTF... R60 for a letter.
Problem 2. There is NO location (street etc) where I was fined (so they can just randomly draw registration numbers and fine you. (F. Idiots)
Problem 3. No photo of my car...

I go to their website, to see my photo. F!ckall photos. There is no links.. nothing to the photo. I tried to phone..guess.. no answer. I emailed them... (I'm not holding my breath).

And earlier this year.. I had some f!cking idiot driving around with my number plates in Cape... Nice... Got that sorted (with a BIG mission). Now how the hell do I know this is not a same problem without seening the photos?

Went to Akasia to see if I can sort this fine .. sorry they are not aarto, can not help.

My mom told me me she paid her fine too, and it's STILL outstanding (so you are not alone).

This is a 3rd world. How do you launch "aarto" and there is f!ckall support? Typical banana goverment... (edit: So you can take false plates and just drive around. There is "no evidence" ... ) . Yea .. let's go live with a system, but it's not 1/2 way completed. We just want to take everyones money!!! (that is what it looks to me)

Edit: My fine comes from 2008/10/20 .... 2008.. Almost a YEAR ago.

Edit x2: Now how will I prove that my wife drove the car? (both my cars are on my name). You can "nominate" someone on their website to take the fine.. but with no photo? How will you know

This is the biggest load of crap I have seen in my live.

The same thing happened to me, I paid using the FNB AARTO account and it did not reflect. I called them and they said that I paid it into the incorrect account?? I was also told that the 50% discount is for 75 and not 32 days as mentioned on the fine.... I have the email address of the person who helped me; pm if you want it?

I've got the same problem - I've phoned them and they asked me to fax through proof of payment. They say any penalties should be reversed and they'll post me a receipt (but I can't phone to confirm that they've received the fax or payment from 2 months ago...)

Faxed it... now i wait...

Thanks. I resent the email yesterday, and it hasn't bounced yet, so I'll wait and see. Will get back to you about that email address if nothing happens.

I paid into a Stdbank account which I see is not on their Website. The "courtesy letter" has the same banks that were on the original notice.

Aarto the joke

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act states "an infringement notice... shall be issued and served or caused to be served to the infringer... by registered mail... within 40 days of the commission of the infringement".

If the notice is sent after the stipulated 40 days, the fine is technically null and void.

Also read the article posted in Pretoria News.

Check your fines before paying for them. Unfortunately I do not know what the procedure is when contesting a fine. Does any one have suggestions?

I also paid two fines and now they returned with the extra fees for courtesy letters.

Good Luck to all in the same boat.

I just found out the same happened to me. The fine was for an amount of R250, discounted to R125 if you pay it strait away. I payed it into an FNB account FNB PTA 62161889658. They say I haven't payed and the amount is now R310! What now?

Unless I know that I am meant to be receiving some registered mail, I will not go to the post office and collect anything... If they want to fine me, they can hand deliver the fine to my place of residence... 95% of the time, the fine will get lost in the system, so chances of the fskers actually getting me to cough up are quite minimal...
