DA apologises for wrong crime stats

maybe it was a pathological lie or a case of incompetency on behalf of the DA. 70% decrease in crime rate is a huge number and I would have personally verified it especially with people on the ground in Khayelitsha. This is how you win the hearts of the people. You don't study them in Microsoft Excel and make claims, you actually reach out to them.

I will go with incompetence as 70% is huge. Now how many incompetents were in the line grabbing the good news without question?

The problem with politicians might be that they grab the limelight for their own ends, and this must have looked like an to good to be true opportunity, not to be missed. Perhaps they should have slept on the good news for one night and done some research first as you suggested.

No one deserves praise for exaggerating and manipulating the truth. Even if it was a case of incompetency on behalf of DA, they don't deserve a praise for that.

And once again you twist my words. I said nothing about giving the DA praise for incorrect stats. I'll ask again, does the DA not deserve praise for trying to bring a community together by building parks, sports venues, etc?

edit: I'd say its because of people like you that politicians always try to hide the truth. Because even if they do the right thing and make a public announcement that they were wrong and will try to fix it they get called all sorts of nasty things.

Yes they deserve a positive acknowledgment for that.

:D Thats all I wanted. Moving on, not sure if I've said this already - DA really should check the stats they receive, as well as take a step back to view the bigger picture. I can understand the mistake fully - two new stations popped up and they were only looking at the stats from the one 'old' station. But its still no excuse.

Personally, 70% versus 24% is not an understandable mistake especially coming from a politician.

Unlike you, I'm not going to be as generous with praise.
Building and maintaining play parks and sports venues is what local governments are suppose to do.

Yep, if those stats were placed before my by the contracted researcher, I would have insisted on verification from another person/organisation.

I don't blame them. Calling them "incompetents" might be a little harsh. I rather say they blind loyalists.

Agreed, perhaps they should read first?

Lies, damned lies, and statistics" is a phrase describing the persuasive power of numbers, particularly the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments, and the tendency of people to disparage statistics that do not support their positions. It is also sometimes colloquially used to doubt statistics used to prove an opponent's point.
The term was popularised in the United States by Mark Twain (among others), who attributed it to the 19th Century British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881): "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." However, the phrase is not found in any of Disraeli's works and the earliest known appearances were years after his death. Other coiners have therefore been proposed. The most plausible, given current evidence, is Englishman Charles Wentworth Dilke (1843–1911).

There are a terrible lot of lies going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true.

True...but sometimes, researchers cherry-pick to support a foregone conclusion by the client (the politician in this case).

I bet if the media spent half as much energy trying to dig up dirt on the DA that they do the ANC the amount of corruption going on behind the scenes would make for a lot of entertaining threads.

Hey stop being such a coward and go back to the ABSA rugby thread and respond to all the question posed to you. Stop running away CHARNA..!

As for the DA, yeah they stuffed up, bad on them. At least they had the balls to put it out in public. The anc on the other hand just keeps on shoving things under that mountain that they call a carpet.

I love threads like these. They're like Easter. Only happens once a year and relished by people who support a glorified rodent leaving his chocolate eggs across the countryside.

I bet if you spent half as much energy pleasuring a woman as you do flexing in the mirror, you might actually give her an orgasm...

Not all of us here are bigots. See my first post in this thread. The DA did screw up. And it was a pretty bad screwup. Shame on them.

But the fact remains, they are still the lesser of the two evils. Plus, the amount of good the DA is doing far overshadows the bad.

And getting back to this story, a 24% drop in crime is still darn good!

Which is what I was thinking as well.
