If you don't understand that some form of upliftment strategy needs to be put in place in order to make the economy viable - make fewer poor people poor - then I don't know.
A personal niggle I have and this is where implementation comes in, is that it shouldn't be limited to race but rather background. I think UCT's proposed new pricing system for students does it well - your race is irrelevant but your financial status isn't. This is also where I believe economic empowerment should take place. You need to up-skill people and churn out those engineers and doctors without sacrificing standards. Private companies will employ on merit as those of merit will make them money. Those not doing so will simply be left behind in an open market.
Would you disagree with that notion, Albereth?
I like the notion of meritocracy. I also believe that it is a fallacy that corporations only find profit in a transaction. There is a great deal of money to be made in investments. Arguably UCT are investing in potential that will have a greater reward in the future.
But the cynic in me says that UCT are squandering money.
The other problem with AA schemes is that behind them is some idiot keeping stats. It is more about chasing quotas than doing long term good.
But the simple truth is that we should invest in educating our children. Provide better schools and teachers and take it from there. Without fixing the cause we will perpetually be treating the symptoms. Chasing the quotas with this generations really does mean that we're jeopardizing the next.
