Cape Town – The ID is on the verge of being swallowed by the DA, and the ID leader, Patricia de Lille, is expected to be elected to one of the DA's two top posts along with Helen Zille.

Interesting development in our political enviroment. I would advise the DA against this move, purely becuase de Lille does not strike me as someone content with playing second fiddle. But on the positive side, it would certainly seal up the Western Cape for them, and the ANC wont have a shout.

Obviously she is happy with playing second fiddle, because she is considering joining them. Plus which would you prefer, playing second fiddle in a party that is actually involved or being head of a party that does nothing.

So true not only for that reason tho, de Lille has lost credibility when she 180 her statement that she will never have alliance with the ANC then jump at the chance to get a seat on the council she does exactly that. De Lille is the "Malema" in SOME CASES of Western Cape politics. She must be muzzled and controlled. Helen must not give or her party too much free reign. She must be kept in check.

So far the DA & Helen Zille has don't a fearly good job under the circumstances, it wold be a pity if have to go find a new party to vote for :S

I have always liked her for her loose cannon approach, and IIRC, we have her to thank for the revelations of the arms deal. She can be of value to the DA, however her history as an opportunist, as you pointed out, could come back and bite the DA. Especially in a position where she is 2nd only to Zille. IMO, she is NOT going to be as docile as Seremane.

ID hardly has any numbers left. Not much to gain there. For De Lille its all about survival, she already made the "gatkruip" speech the day results of elections was available.

Join the DA if you have an opinion then.

I might just renew my membership if Pat joins them. She is an amazing woman who is a highly underrated politician. Helen needs her as much as what she needs Helen.

I am all for an opposition that has the clout to keep the ruling party in check. I say more!

on which planet is this?

planet earth. the DA has little to no credibility amongst large parts of the population, and the Western Cape is all they could ever hope to win for the next 200 years at this rate. The DA needs credible non-white folk to start attracting more of the population to vote for them. even better, they should align to form a new party and get a new name while they're at it....

Exactly. The DA announces its merger with the other major opposition parties... Next week COPE implodes, and the ID has been on life-support for a while now.

It's not a merger, it's a mercy-killing.

There are several race groups in South Africa. How many vote for the ANC?

I thinks its a good thing, about time some of the opposition joined forces to become stronger.

Oh and de Lille and her ID got loads of credibility among large parts of the population ?

There are some great black people working their way through the DA ranks and not just being fast tracked because of their skin colour.

How can people so easily trust de Lille after her ANC screw up ?

It's funny: under Zille, the DA went up 5/6% in last year's elections to 17 odd %, while the ID was reduced to minnows with 1 or less than 1%. In the end, it will actually be a mercy killing if the DA swallows them, as the ID has gone nowhere since it was formed. I would prefer the DA to rather stand back though and let the people come to them rather than being forced to come over as part of a merger.

Personally, I don't have much respect for de Lille, she talks too much and coasts on her past achievements too much.

Still think it is a good idea, just means more votes for DA and I dont know what people are worried about with De Lille being number two thing. Even if she is unhappy about it, what can she do? She won't try put Zille in disrepute because that would reflect badly on the DA which would be her party. She also can't somehow gain leadership, just because she wants too; She will have to be voted in.

So my question is, what do you guys think will happen? Am I missing something?

I not too sure of the DA structure, but it seems to follow a system much like the ANC, with a federal council (ANC NEC), being the highest decision making body between National Congress. If it works on a proportional vote on the council, De Lille could lobby support there. But it depends on the make up of the council. And IMO, given the recent tensions in the Western Cape leadership for the DA, some interesting times could be ahead.

Are you joking? Yes the DA has no credibility amongst large parts of the population. That is because they are uneducated drones, and the only thing they know to do is cross the ANC's ballot box. Your problem with the DA, is that they arn't a bunch of racists that allow people to join them just because they are "non-white" and it shows. The WC is the best run province in South Africa, and just take a look at the ANC or COPE which has loads of non-whites. You don't have to agree that they are a great party, but they sure beat the other options we currently got.

Ya, true. Maybe it isnt such a great idea right now. The DA should first sort itself out, before considering the merger.
