Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance had performed an "underhand power grab" by putting the Overberg district municipality under administration, the ANC said on Thursday.

ANC Western Cape spokesperson on local government Pierre Uys was reacting to the provincial government's decision on Wednesday to intervene in the troubled municipality and dissolve its ANC-controlled council.

Uys said the DA administration had "grabbed the control... that it could not democratically win at the poll".

The move, he said, came after it deliberately destabilised the council and withheld support it was supposed to give.

Plotted

Uys said provincial local government minister Anton Bredell should have intervened in the council long ago, but instead waited until the deadline for approving a budget had expired so he could appoint an administrator of his choice.

"The province did not do its duty as it has a very clear support and oversight role," he said.

"He merely sat back and purposely waited for the time to run out to simply put in action what had been plotted... it is an underhand power grab."

Bredell said on Wednesday that the council had not met since the end of March this year and had failed to produce a budget for the 2010/11 financial year.

Its speaker and mayor had resigned, and it had not approved integrated development or transport plans.

In April this year, the ANC named Overberg mayor Maurencia Gillion as one of its underperforming public representatives in the province, and ordered her to quit. She hung on for another two months before stepping down.

NOT surprised this hasn't been posted here.

I can only imagine the outcry if the ANC had done the same.

They tried quite a few times over the years, trying to regain control of Cape Town. Unfortunately the pesky law of the land and constitution prevented them...

Here I thought it was a serious article - then saw it was something the ANC said.

Recently, ANCYL saying they'll make Cape Town unmanageable.

And that makes this unlawfull act of the DA ok?

So even the ANC says the mayor was the one of their worst. Why didn't they step in and appoint someone new? Bit of a regional fail aint it?

Did anyone miss the part where the DA LOST the Overberg election?

They tried 17 times if memory serves, so good they got there own back.
Possibly they should take lessons.

Yes they lost it but have clearly stepped in amongst the failure and ruins by both the Overberg chapter and the regional chapter of the ANC. So people must just sit and wait more while the idiots in power cause more of their services to deterioate?

Uh - unlawful? Sorry? Where is it unlawful?

Let's try again:

ANC didn't take control of Cape Town, because the law prevented them from doing so.
DA did take control of Overberg, because the law was right behind them.

Notice a subtle difference there?

What I was thinking!
