It isn't so much political parties as it is the very nature of government-delivered services, especially government-owned monopoly services.

Unconstrained by the market and reason, governments run by professional politicians and ever-burgeoning bureaucracies suck ever more vitality, common sense and money from any system.

Most people want more government, regulation and control. That doesn't come free.

It's the Eskom mentality, in case anyone didn't notice:

The City of Cape Town says it has lost a substantial amount of revenue and restructuring the tariffs was one of the measures to ensure a sustainable source of income.

We couldn't sell enough water, so now that the supply has stabilised, we need to hike prices to recover the loss. And when nobody is buying and there is an oversupply, we'll increase prices again. Ad infinitum, until there is one person left paying for everything...

How did they do that? They did nothing besides make it residents problem, and now they want residents to pay for the pleasure.

It seems the DA is capable of doing nothing, because its always "national" governments fault.

The DA / COCT are just as guilty as the national government. There's more than enough evidence to show how poorly they handled the crisis.

Sure, their handling of the situation was fairly good, I can't say whether the increases were justified or not. My gut reaction is that they may have overestimated.
But at least you know those extra funds will now be used to actually expand the city's water network.
With the ANC they would have just pocketed the difference.

Exactly. If water levels go back to normal, and usage increases to previous levels, well pay 250% more.

Same with petrol decreases we have had in the past. Product/Food prices never comes down.

I wish someone with a basic understanding of economics would setup a system that automatically adjusts the tariffs. Namely they should be determined entirely on three things, the amount of water in the dams , the existing usage and the operating costs of the distribution network. These tariffs should be re-calculated once a month.

Then you don't need to have stupid things like additional drought tariffs based on water restrictions and such. The system automatically adjusts it. Then if the City wants to do more maintenance on the network, they have to vote on a budget that is based on the operating costs of the network. That keeps the tariffs on water away from funding things that are not related to water.

I am unfortunately with the ANC on this one, those tariffs were understandable when we were on the verge of running out of water. That is not the case now.

So because I'm critical of the DA I'm an ANC supporter? Damn, because I've been critical of the Anc too, so that must now make me an eff supporter. The COCT bungled the water crisis along with the national government, both are to blame.
