DA using 'invented Day Zero' to justify water tariff increases: ANC

The city council set the tariffs - I have very good memory that they voted through the proposal.

That is what I would expect, but when the deputy mayor says things like this:

“Any decision by the City of Cape Town to lower current water restrictions and thus the tariffs associated with them is dependent on national government relaxing the restriction on water releases from the dams,” Neilson told Daily Maverick.

To me that is clearly implying the tariffs are not their fault.

Further down he mentions cost recovery considerations. But that surely should be what the new fixed charge is for.

However apparently I have no idea what I'm talking about and the city can't charge less for water even if they wanted to.

The numerous times I've engaged in this discussion across multiple threads I have still to receive reasonable comments on the simplest of matters. Like exactly who with experience and confirmed accurate past predictions saw the drought coming. Not water demand increasing which was (to some extent) planned for, but the extended drought. And who here would've been happy to build desal plants back in 2008 or even sooner, only to have them stand still during the electricity crisis and several continuous years of decent rainfall while costing you lots of money. Ya, I'm sure all of you would've been singing the highest praise at that point in time These discussions are a complete and utter joke

Of course they've done some things right. They've also been shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly during the water shortage. They handled it poorly and the national government handled it poorly.

It's not just about the water. It's how they think they have carte blanche to do whatever they please now that they have a bit of power. I shudder to think what will happen if they got national control.

Mashaba did sweet f-all in Jhb since the last elections. Roads are the same as or worse than it was under the ANC, and the same goes for water/power outages. Doesn't miss a chance to brag about catching some random corrupt official from the previous administration on Twitter though, and never misses the chance to kiss some EFF ass. But at least we should be thankful that they doubled our rates & taxes...

There have been plenty level headed arguments about how poor the DA have handled the crisis. I don't see how that's unreasonable. Additionally people have given problems they've had in DA areas, yes the issues might be the same or worse under the anc. The DA are not infallible.

I see it as unreasonable when people are unable to concede that some things that were done were good, some alright, some downright bad.

It feels like I've said this a 100 times, but clearly I need to do it again before I am labelled as some DA loving hippie: the DA has done all of the above, and to be incredibly clear that means they have also done bad things. In my mind I couldn't give a flying toss whether this was the DA, ANC, Trump or the man in the moon, yet people latch onto that at the first opportunity when people disagree with statements involving political parties.

If CoCT gets its way, Capetonians could see some let up of water restrictions

Executive Deputy Mayor City Of Cape Town Ian Neilson says his office has been trying to get a meeting with the Water and Sanitation Minister Gugile Nkwinti to discuss relaxation of water restrictions.

Cape Town's dam levels have risen to above 50% with the recent rains but the Department of Water and Sanitation said the city should rather wait until the dams reach 85%.

Nielsen says currently the minister's 45% reduction in consumption is still in place and therefore the city cannot relax restrictions until such time the minister increases the releases from the dams.

If the City gets its way and move to level 5 restrictions, this means the level 5 tariffs will kick in, says Nielson.
