Ok, Sackboy... notice what I called him.. he's the Municipal Manager... his job does NOT entail getting into the media.. its to run the city and do a good job... if they're unknown to the citizens and the city is running, it generally means they're doing a good job.

And yes, I'm ranting because I have reason to rant.. I'm guessing you don't live on a street that no longer has street name signs? I currently do because our Municipal Manager had a little fit when he found out that the citizens who lived on these roads were removing the new name signs, that we hadn't been consulted on... so he figures, lets just remove all of them instead.

You wouldn't get away with that in Cape Town either, just so you know. You disagree with him, so he must be an lunatic, right I see the logic!

Would Cape Town have had the audacity of changing nearly 200 street names, that had NO connection with Apartheid what so ever, without consulting the residents of the areas (which are ALL middle and upper class areas)? Oh, and just so you know, one of the changes, was to a road named Broadway, which is now called SWAPO.... that was the type of change that was done... Would you, in a 4 or 5 million rand house (which is the value of properties on Broadway want to live on a road called SWAPO?.. hmmm?

If I were the only person that disagreed with him, I'd write it off as just a small thing, but considering the municipality is being taken to court over the issue, and everyone in those areas has a very real dislike or even hatred for the man does kind of say alot about how he "runs" the city....

What or Who's SWAPO? Why can't a street in a million rand hood be named after such?

You don't know what SWAPO is?

SWAPO being the South West Africa People's Organization.... Has rather negative connotations in SA.

Oh, and there are a few roads like that in Durban that have been renamed.. there is a Che Guevara, and an Andrew Zondo road...

The DA planned a similar thing in Cape Town. Changing names from generic ones to resistance figures. They did ask for comments and then I read in the newspaper that they had received none, despite sending in a few of my own. The councilor then refuted that such a person had said it (quite a common DA reaction is to deny newspaper reports) and then promptly put the name changes on permanent hold, probably for after the election. They also put up mis-spelt street signs in the City centre and they have remained there for a long time and probably still does.

So not much difference there then.

Rather large difference...

I've seen the 39 proposed changes which have been put on hold and none of them are as divisive as some of the 178+ implemented in Durban.

Andrew Zondo Rd is named after a terrorist who went into a crowded shopping mall in Toti and planted a bomb and killed 5 innocent people and maimed and injured many many more. Do you want to guess where Andrew Zondo Rd is?

The difference being that the ANC made no claims about name changes being a waste of time and resources.

What does that have to do with anything? I just don't understand this.

It's as if you're stating that it's OK because the DA reckons it's a waste of time and resources - bizarre...

You clearly haven't read the whole thread. I'm saying the DA thinks it's a waste of time and money, yet go on to do the very same thing, albeit in a limited fashion. We're talking about road name changes as well, not names of provinces.

The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal says that accelerating development and service delivery was a greater priority than changing the name of the province.

"We don't think the question of the name of the province is a priority for now," the party's provincial spokesman Mtholephi Mthimkhulu said.

"The priority for now is the acceleration of development and service delivery."

They are implying that for now its not the best use of money and resources.. aka a waste...

Because they're being pressured by the government, who happen to be controlled by who?

It does not mean they won't do it, or that it's a waste of money or that it's a waste of time. Besides, they ARE doing it, aren't they, so the quote (about a province and NOT roads) is moot.

Strange this - some of the posts are not showing up at all and the conversation goes all haywire - will PM a mod about this.

But lets face the facts here, if we're going to bring up hypocrisy then we might as well turn this in to an ANC thread, because they're firmly on the top of that list...

Like in the other thread, I'm finding it intriguing that Sackboy doesn't comment on the divisiveness or lack thereof of the name changes in CT (which when I looked over it, didn't seem all that uncalled for in the long run, actually a fair number of them make alot of sense in terms of returning original names, or honouring local people)

This is because I wanted to argue specifics without clouding the point with irrelevance. It is also not the topic.
We're discussing the DA, their double standards and lack of responsiveness and apparent secrecy when it comes to public involvement at local level.

Actually, thats not the topic at all of this thread.. the topic of this thread relates alot more to the DA not being intimidated by the ANC.

You seem to be the only one who has this issue with the DA... everyone else seems to have a very different experience with the DA
