Is the Dacia Jogger Hybrid good value for money at £22,595?

It’s the cheapest hybrid seven-seater on the market, but the standard Jogger starts at just £17,145

Dacia has announced UK pricing for its new Jogger Hybrid 140, and it’s left us with a question that we’d like to throw over to you.

So, here goes. Would you consider the Jogger Hybrid to be good value at £22,595? Not the most exciting question on these pages, we’ll grant you that, but it is particularly pertinent right now.

New car prices are rocketing and electrification (no matter how mild) is contributing to that. So, when the base-spec petrol-powered Jogger starts at £17,145 it’s a little bit of a shock to see a second powertrain costing £5,000 more.

That £22,595 figure is for the Jogger’s mid-range Expression trim though, and the Hybrid only comes with that or the top-spec Extreme SE trim. Like-for-like the Jogger Hybrid is £4,150 more expensive than its equivalent ICE-only powertrain.

Forget subscriptions opening up factory-fitted equipment, Dacia's got a freebie for car owners

Dacia is taking a cheeky stab at manufacturers offering subscriptions for factory-fitted equipment - like BMW charging for heated seats, for example - by offering drivers of any car, not just Dacias, a free hot water bottle.

Rebranding the hot water bottles 'heated seat saviours", Renault-parented Dacia is aiming to prove that comfort shouldn't come at a monthly cost. It pointed out its top-trim Duster, Jogger and Sandero Stepway come with heated seats as standard.

"After picking up their hot water bottle," said Dacia, "motorists can safely fill it up as per the instructions provided and place it on their car seat (prior to driving) to warm it up."

Luke Broad, Dacia UK brand director noted how the 'heated seat saviours' were just a bit of fun, but said "they do highlight the direction the wider industry is going regarding subscription-based access to features. Asking someone to pay extra to activate factory-fitted equipment certainly isn’t Dacia".

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“For this price and with its ruthless attention to detail, the Jogger is great just the way it is”

It could be that we’ve just driven too many electric vehicles recently, with everything driven by wire, but the Jogger has a rather pleasing mechanical feel to proceedings. It’s actually quite fun for a family bus, although given that we drove it without passengers onboard perhaps we should wait to try it with a full load before giving a definitive judgement.

You do find yourself looking at the car and thinking of the one or two little things that could really make it better. Could you do with more stuff? Sure, but that would ruin the point. Actually for this price and with its ruthless attention to detail, the Jogger is great just the way it is.

However, it’s worth remembering that while the Hybrid is pricier than the 1.0 TCe, it’s still an incredible bargain compared with absolutely everything else. Anything vaguely comparable, from the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports to Volkswagen’s Caddy MPV, costs several thousand pounds more. Dacias have pretty strong residual values as well, which keeps the monthlies very attractive too.

We still prefer the even cheaper petrol version, but if an automatic gearbox is a must, the Hybrid is a two-pedal Jogger with excellent economy that retains almost everything we like about the standard car.

You see, Dacia has unveiled its first in a series of ‘InNature’ accessories for the Jogger. It’s called the ‘Sleep Pack’ and it’s essentially a giant 50kg wooden box that fits in the boot of your Romanian MPV (once you’ve removed the third row of seats) and then folds out to become a double bed that’s almost two metres long and 1.3m wide.

The bed comes complete with a foam mattress and “a surprising 60cm of headroom” says Dacia. It can be assembled in “less than two minutes” and is described as being “simple, removable and affordable” although there’s no word on how much the camper kit will actually cost just yet. We do know that it’ll be available to order in the second quarter of this year, though.

Unlike the EGOE kit that we tested in the Skoda Enyaq last year, Dacia’s Sleep Pack doesn’t feature any kitchen accessories, but you do get 220-litres of storage inside the box itself. Oh, and we’re told that a “smart tent” will also be available soon, which connects to the Jogger’s open boot and should provide sleeping space for the whole family. There will also be proper blackout blinds for the Jogger’s windows to ensure maximum privacy…
