Dakar 2021

so why call it the Dakar,
I get why its not called the Paris Dakar anymore, but why the Dakar?
It's an iconic name.

Anyway, what the **** did you mention Peru for? You are aware it isn't held in South America anymore, right? Maybe follow the actual event sometime and then come post?

WFT, its in Saudi this year?, didn't see that earlier
so why not call it the Arabian rally or something more descriptive.
they just keep the name everyyear, when its nowhere near Dakar,

its all marketing hype to me.

Always followed the Dakar, until this year, due to location choice

but its near Peru, and South America
nowhere near Dakar,

thats like saying I live in Singapore, even though I'm nowhere near Singapore.
Not just that, there is entire series of rally raids known as the Dakar Series, with rally raids in Asia and Central Europe.

The American endurance series was called the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and the current Asian endurance series is called the Asian Le Mans Series. There is an entire category of sportscars named after Le Mans, Le Mans Prototypes, and these cars are raced across America, Europe and Asia.

Le Mans is now synonymous with endurance racing and Dakar is now synonymous with rally raid. You say Le Mans and people think of driving a sportscar for 24-hours. You say Dakar and it is images of dunes, deserts and tears. Its the spirit of the race.

I would personally not set a foot in that country but it does have some beautiful scenery. I would love it if it returned to Africa, but that is likely to never happen again.

what if it came to the Karoo and Namib deserts?
seems the name is meaningless, they could do it in America in Nevada and nobody would know the difference.

I always wondered how a sub-Saharan event would look. In 1992 it was even called the Paris-Cape Town Rally and came down the Atlantic coastline and finished in Cape Town, so there is a precedent.

It could work. Some rally-style stages through the forests of Congo and Angola then on to the dunes and deserts of Namibia and the Karoo. I can picture some amazing shots of them blasting along the Skeleton Coast. High speed blast across the Free State, loop through the Lesotho Highlands, down in to the Cape and finishing against the backdrop of Table Mountain.

nice idea that, nothing is harsher that Africa's terrain, but safety and logistics remain the biggest issues.
and clearly the idea behind the Dakar was that, but now its just a trademark to be applied to anything.
just to conjure up the original Dakar.

Sub-Saharan Africa is safe enough. I think we could easily pull it off.

Places like Mali, Mauratania and Chad are a different story though. That's a different kind of risk.
