I get why its not called the Paris Dakar anymore, but why the Dakar?

WFT, its in Saudi this year?, didn't see that earlierIt's an iconic name.
Anyway, what the **** did you mention Peru for? You are aware it isn't held in South America anymore, right? Maybe follow the actual event sometime and then come post?
Show's how great the event is. It can transcend the place it was named after.they just keep the name everyyear, when its nowhere near Dakar,
general trademark I bet,Same reason we still call it the Olympics

what if it came to the Karoo and Namib deserts?if it returned to Africa,
what if it came to the Karoo and Namib deserts?
seems the name is meaningless, they could do it in America in Nevada and nobody would know the difference.
nice idea that, nothing is harsher that Africa's terrain, but safety and logistics remain the biggest issues.I always wondered how a sub-Saharan event would look. In 1992 it was even called the Paris-Cape Town Rally and came down the Atlantic coastline and finished in Cape Town, so there is a precedent.
It could work. Some rally-style stages through the forests of Congo and Angola then on to the dunes and deserts of Namibia and the Karoo. I can picture some amazing shots of them blasting along the Skeleton Coast. High speed blast across the Free State, loop through the Lesotho Highlands, down in to the Cape and finishing against the backdrop of Table Mountain.
Not that difficult:I'm trying, but I need to eat more potatoes to get a Friday thread going.

and clearly the idea behind the Dakar was that, but now its just a trademark to be applied to anything.
just to conjure up the original Dakar.
