Damaged hard drive?

Although there is some clear trolling going on I'll humour you...

One minute you are claiming someone conclusively proved that my drive had experienced more than 350Gs, I battle to find this and then all of a sudden it then becomes more a matter of it just falling and that you feel that this is sufficient to void the warranty. I'm afraid to say it does not say anything about that on the Seagate website. If there is reference made to a drive falling please point it out to me.

Also interesting that the drive is covered up the 350Gs but you claim any fall will void the warranty. Care to explain how a drive experiences up to 350Gs without a fall?

You really are brilliant at knowing all the details relating to a case without actually being there. Quite a talent. I merely described the problem with the drive that fell as a clicking noise and when chatting to a technician about that old drive I also described it as making a clicking noise. Now you had not heard either drive so it is rather interesting that you know with 100% certainty that the clicking noise differed.

What are you getting so worked up for?

When you work with computers, no talent is necessary in understanding what noise a dropped, dead HDD would make, no matter how far away it fell.

FYI most sounds dead HDDs make would be described as ticking or clicking sound by non-techie people. Closer up, there are faint differences.

There are some people who just cannot resist carry their personal issues through from one thread to the next. Shame. They clearly feel annoyed with the way one thread turned out so they make an appearance in any other thread by that person just to make snide comments to try and get some payback.

What are you on about? Are you saying I was carrying personal issues from another thread to this one, with my post:

"IMO ticking is an immediate sign of physical damage.

Nothing to lose by returning the drive you fscked up, except your clean conscience."

Thanks to Lycanthrope for sharing some of your attempted underhanded dealings with us. I'll keep that in mind if ever the opportunity arises for us to do business.

LOL! :D

How about we focus on the important aspects raised Postman?

* I need the link to the portion of the Seagate website that says any fall of the hard drive would void all warranties.

* Also the circumstances under which a drive can experience anywhere near 350Gs without a fall.

No idea but from personal experience just knocking a external HD over while spinning is enough to fook it up, I'm not even talking about dropping it.

Guilty :o

No hard drive manufacturer offers a guarantee against shock of any kind - of course it is impossible for them to check if a disk was damaged due to shock or bad workmanship without opening the drive and doing a thorough investigation, which is simply not feasible. If there is no visible damage to the disk, then they will swap it...

From Seagate:

What Does Our Warranty Not Cover? Our warranties do not cover any problem that is caused by (a) commercial use; accident; abuse; neglect; shock; electrostatic discharge; heat or humidity beyond product specifications; improper installation; operation; maintenance or modification; or (b) any misuse contrary to the instructions in the user manual; or (c) loss passwords; or (d) malfunctions caused by other equipment. Our limited warranties are void if a product is returned with removed, damaged or tampered labels or any alterations (including removal of any component or external cover). Our warranties do not cover data loss – back up the contents of your drive to a separate storage medium on a regular basis. Also, consequential damages; incidental damages; and costs related to data recovery, removal and installation are not recoverable under our warranties.

What Do Our Warranties Usually Cover? Our limited warranties cover defects in material or workmanship in new Seagate or Maxtor products. Only consumers purchasing Seagate or Maxtor products from authorized Seagate retailers or resellers may obtain coverage under our limited warranties. Please see the limited consumer warranty that accompanied your product for the specific warranty terms that apply to your product.

Where?

It was always about the matter of the drive just falling and breaking due to physical damage. The calculations were more for food for thought, I wasn't trying to make a big thing out of them.

Any falls that lead to the HDD dying. At least in my experience.

@ Lancelot: Also remember that shock tolerance while the HDD is operating is much lower.

Now, what I am interested in, is if you told the people where ever you RMAed the HDD that you dropped/knocked it over?

So where does the 350Gs come into it? I still can't fathom under which circumstances a drive will experience 350Gs unless it is dropped. 350Gs sounds like a fair bit of a shock to me.

The interesting thing to note is that I originally never had any intention of attempting to use the warranty and was merely asking if anything could be done.

That's rich coming from the JOKER who de-rails plenty threads :)

Thanks for your valuable input in this thread.

And there you have it.

Hey Bwana, here is one for you. Last time I felt the need to tell someone to fsuk off you felt the need to issue me with an infraction.

Looks like your heading in the right direction for another infraction. You my dear sir, rub people up the wrong e-way! Sorry for being blunt, but I have kept my mouth shut for long enough! You always have too be right, even if you prove yourself wrong! With all your eliquant use of the "Queen's English" you still come out looking like a chump! Please do us all a favour... and think before you TYPE!!!

So me rubbing you up the wrong way is a reason for an infraction for me!?! ha ha ha nice one. Be blunt. But don't hide behind acronyms. Have the balls to say what you mean.

Oh no, I am so hurt by what you said. Please, please be my friend. I am so desperate for more imaginary friends.

Let me ask you to spend a minute or two looking through this thread to show me where you added any value. When you find it please point it out to me. Thanks

I may at some point need to concede something.... and that is that the education system in this country may indeed be failing miserably. I just got a PM that clearly indicates that there are some seriously thick people in this country.

I will remain hopeful that it is in fact genetic and not the failing education system.

;)

Would you seriously like me to post your response to the PM???

I would but, unfortunately that would be in contravention to the RULES of this forum!

Maybe I should just fwd the said PM to a MOD or ADMIN!

P.S. Education has nothing too do with it! I may be a lot older that you. Now, go wipe your nose and take of that T-shirt that you are so fond of wearing!
