Dashboard Cameras

I'm really enjoying the two mini 0801s I got from China, GPS model with 32GB miniSD. They're tiny, hidden behind the RVM. Fit and forget until needed.

The Mini 0801 looks very good based on the one and only review I've watched.

I want something small, discreet and somewhat cheap that isn't going to tempt thieves. Is the Mini 0801 still the best option based on those criteria?

This looks very nice - my last china purchase was a disaster though, so would prefer to buy from a local supplier.

I might be a bit insane just considering this, but I think I might just buy two Mini 0801 cameras and use the second one as a rear-mounted camera.

That is a bit too visible for my liking mainly due to the suction mount and as Techmoan mentions the silver bit around the lens is a dead give-away.

A few weeks back, I tried very hard to order the Mini 0801 from Amazon, both the .co.uk and .com sites told me I am a lowly scum of the Earth South African that is not worthy of purchasing just about anything from Amazon, so I decided stuff Amazon, I will fallback on the eBay option (that makes me feel rather uneasy/uncomfortable).

After a bit of browsing I stumbled onto joovuu.com, at which point I noticed that there was supposedly a new revision of the Mini 0801 coming soon.

Has anyone had any experience with international orders placed with joovuu.com?

Procrastination should be my middle name.

I ordered two Mini 0801s with GPS last year, through AliExpress. $89 each, delivered in 4 days. Very happy with them. Had the USB cable wired in to ignition and behind trim, so very discreet. Both have 32GB Class 6 microSD added. Recently did a firmware upgrade on both, no issues. Daytime video is superb. Night not bad, but haven't played with settings. On phone now so terse info.

Take a look at the Mobius Action Camera. Tiny form factor - I mean real tiny - and records in 1080p and the night time performance is pretty superb.

For me it was a toss-up between the Mobius and Mini 0801. The clincher was 1. No RVM or windscreen mount for Mobius, and 2. Cooling issues for Mobius, esp in SA climate.

Did that price include the GPS logger and how much extra was postage ?

Went back and checked my records.

Ordered on 7 Nov 2013 on AliExpress from SHENZHEN XINRAN TECHNOLOGIES CO.,LTD. Contact Julie on Skype julie_sanahi.

Here is the unit. I see that it's now called the X24, but when I ordered it was the 0801 Ambarella, as per my order and invoice. Also, the current price is $93.50 I see. I paid $89.45 each, plus $24.21 shipping, for total landed cost of $203.11 for both together ... Julie contacted me on Skype and I seem to recall she gave a small discount because I ordered two. Paid by SA credit card, no issue.

Delivery in SA was 12 November 2013, by DHL.

What was reassuring is that their technical boffin is jokiin on the dashcamtalk website. He's an active contributor and helped me understand the GPS timezone setting which I missed.

That is good to hear...

After my ordeal last night, I am definitely investing in one of these, if not 2 of them.

Alternative is the GoPro rip off that is surprisingly good and comes with features that the GoPro does not have. The SJ4000. Cost is $99 and comes with a cradle for the car, plus the software has car cam settings.

this the one I use: http://www.szswill.com/car-camera-hd/dashboard-camera-d230.html , not sure what it would be for you guys.

at this price if i only get 12 months out of and then need to buy again, works out cheaper than the others.

built in screen and if the SD is full it just over-writes. so keep a spare card in the car, so if something happens on the video I can save it for when i can download.

So what is the Price? That site doesn't mention price at all...

Anyone mind sharing the top 3 to look at?

Thanks.

This is the HP ac100 currently on special for R1300 at Makro.http://www.guzzle.co.za/specials/view/708688/ It comes with an 8GB sd card and various mounting solutions. I used the the bicycle arm clamp to fix the camera to the rearview mirror. It has a dash cam function that records 3min segments until the sd card is full and then deletes the oldest videos.
When in car mode it starts recording as soon as you start the vehicle and stops when the power is turned off. I just did a quick lap around the block and it seems to do be working quite well.

I take it you have to charge it through cigarette lighter/plug. How long does charge take and last?

Yes you charge it through a cigarette lighter/ plug but its not included. I had an old car charger that fits. I only got it today so no idea how long it takes.

I don't intend using it for anything else so it will always be connected. The next time i take the car in for a service I'll ask them to hardwire the power cable to the car.

I had to return the camera to Makro this morning because it was not storing the time and date. The new one is working 100%
