Dashboard Cameras

hows the cobra range?
Does viewing angle play a big role. some are 140 degrees but does this affect the clarity?

Just thought I would chime in here on a unit we recently got in for sample.

Nothing fancy but here are the features:

GPS (Cold boot lock on in about 90-120 seconds)
6G Lens
160’ Wide Angle Lens
Hardware HDR

*Recording Resolutions:
2560X1080 @30FPS
2304X1296 @30FPS
1920X1080 @45FPS
1920X1080 @30FPS with HDR
1280X720 @60FPS
1280X720 @30FPS

The unit is also rated to operate in temperatures of up to 75’c.

The packaging on these units is retail quality, unlike many of the cheapies we have played with before.

Fit and finish of the unit is quite impressive, everything fits together nicely with no creaks or flex around the seams.

A nice change from the normal USB charging cable is a 4m long flat USB cable, making it easier to route the cable. The 8 included cable tidies will assist in neatening up the installation.

The included car charger is of the USB variety so it can double as your phone charger.

It is illuminated with a bright blue ring around the top, depending on which side of Joburg you're from you may or may not appreciate that ;)

The platform used is the Ambarella A7LA50 along with an OmniVision 4689 4MP Sensor with hardware HDR and a F2.0 lens which should allow for some relatively good night footage.

I will hopefully be posting some recordings soon to give you an idea of what cams with similar platforms will perform like so you don’t have to drop your cash blindly on one of these things.

As we were about to order in bulk the unit was discontinued by the manufacturer due to intermittent GPS lock on issues :(

If all goes well with the gods of customs we will land a similar replacement early Jan and I'll post some feedback when we've had a chance to play with them.

We've also ordered a few rearview mirror dual camera units with android built in and an affordable low light single lens model.

On special for today...

I think Jakes147 and Marine1 have got this camera, going on previous posts in this thread.

I would not recommend this as a dash cam. The video quality is good but the firmware is not set-up for functioning as a day to day dash cam. Although it says loop recording in the manual, the camera will not start with a full sd card. This means you have to delete a file each time you get in the car for it to start recording.

I ended up getting one of the 0803 mini's that Arthur imported and am very happy with the overall quality and functionality.

Yup my biggest issue with it, you have to manually remove files as it doesnt loop record.
Now try deleting files on that crap touchscreen.
Would not take this camera if it was for free

I have an order for 100 dashcam in some ****hole country. So I need the following:

1. Easy to tuck away
2. 12 v power to connect direct
3. Reliable
4. Movement detection (gsensor)
5. GPS (optional)
6. Screen not essential
7. Loop recording

Which would you advise?

Got to say for the money the geeko from Esquire does what I need but the problem is it isn't full HD
the issue I have with most of these units is they use a flimsy cigarette lighter charger very poor quality
Also they use mini as opposed to micro USB
The geeko does everything you need. But it does not offer full HD and there are very limited mounts for it.

I don't mind ordering from overseas....just need the reliability.

Well so far the Geeko seems to perform well but again no HD, cant see number plates.
I dont know what else to advise you on.
That HP is complete junk and there is no support for it, in terms of firmware.
Thx.

I have that Geeko dashcam - very solid and works well. Has front and rear camera's, GPS, accelerometer and semi-decent software. The problem is it's not HD as you say. Otherwise it's a great all-rounder.

Wanted to get this but only 118 degree angle. Is this fine?
