Dashboard Cameras

The guys that have dashcams, do you pack them away after each trip or what? Leaving them out is risky I would imagine.

Mine stays mounted. I've had it for over a year with no problems, and my car is parked in a car park.

Just thought I would chime in here on a unit we recently got in for sample.

Nothing fancy but here are the features:

GPS (Cold boot lock on in about 90-120 seconds)
6G Lens
160’ Wide Angle Lens
Hardware HDR

*Recording Resolutions:
2560X1080 @30FPS
2304X1296 @30FPS
1920X1080 @45FPS
1920X1080 @30FPS with HDR
1280X720 @60FPS
1280X720 @30FPS

The unit is also rated to operate in temperatures of up to 75’c.

The packaging on these units is retail quality, unlike many of the cheapies we have played with before.

Fit and finish of the unit is quite impressive, everything fits together nicely with no creaks or flex around the seams.

A nice change from the normal USB charging cable is a 4m long flat USB cable, making it easier to route the cable. The 8 included cable tidies will assist in neatening up the installation.

The included car charger is of the USB variety so it can double as your phone charger.

It is illuminated with a bright blue ring around the top, depending on which side of Joburg you're from you may or may not appreciate that ;)

The platform used is the Ambarella A7LA50 along with an OmniVision 4689 4MP Sensor with hardware HDR and a F2.0 lens which should allow for some relatively good night footage.

I will hopefully be posting some recordings soon to give you an idea of what cams with similar platforms will perform like so you don’t have to drop your cash blindly on one of these things.

Does it loop recording after card full ?

Along with these dashcams is there any easy way to record the speed at which you are travelling?

It overlays your GPS speed into the video.

The unit we got has a cheeky feature to disable the GPS overlay if you hit a defined speed...A feature we will request to be removed should we decide to bring them in.

Quick update on the dashcam I posted about previously.

Here are 3 10-15 second clips taken from the unit in broad daylight, at night on the highway and the road leading into Pomona/Bredell.

In the package is an exe for the data player but if anybody is wary of downloading the package I can upload the videos to youtube.

Image quality in the day is excellent, quality at night is above average.

We have two gripes with the unit so far:

1)The G-Sensor is too sensitive, even at the lowest setting, resulting in almost every clip being flagged as emergency recording and will not be overwritten. This is something they will fix in the firmware.

2)The HDR rating on the sensor is only about 62dB and is such a low rating it's not even worth mentioning. (We deal with two ranges of IP Camera brands offering 100dB and 126dB and those results are amazing in high contrast scenarios.

The SNR of the sensor is also quite low but I think this is more of an issue with most of the sensors used in the low-mid range units. Higher end units will use the Sony Exmor-R range of sensors which generally offer superior performance but are generally found in units retailing at $300+

What are the recommendations for a dashcam that decently ticks all the boxes of what a good dashcam can do (i.e. decent resolution, good night mode, ease of use, etc...) and won't break the bank?

Are there any GoPro's that could meet this criteria and fit on a bicycle too?

All of the above might come in handy when I start helping out with our local neighbourhood watch :)

Resurrecting an older thread, but has anyone got any experience with the Garmin range of Dashcams?
Looking at the Dash Cam 20, as it has full HD, and includes GPS location and speed on the cam.
