Dashboard Cameras

I'm sorry you see it as sarcasm. That's not the definition of sarcasm BTW. Here you go...

There are dozens more dash cameras in the $ 20 - $ 30 range, but, if I was looking for a dash camera, I would rather go for a 4 K sports camera, which has menu functions to use as a dash camera...and then you can also use it as a sports cam

So, in essence, you can get a 4K UHD camera delivered for about R 600

The main and "BIG" difference between an action camera and dashcam is that the dashcam automatically loops the recording and has a quick delete protect button

Action/sports cams have software menu options now that allow it to loop, just like a dash cam...my sports/action cam does too...here is a feature set of one of the linked action cams that sells for $ 27.99. Take note where it says it supports loop recording, time lapse, waterproof, 4 K (30 fps) etc etc

How long does delivery take from Gearbest?

2- 6 days with DHL. With AMAREX 7-12 days and through the speedy S.A Post Office....who knows, anything up to 60 - 70 days if you are lucky enough to get it.

I prefer the Viofo A119 dashcam. Not as big as the others so won't be easily seen and it uses capacitors as opposed to batteries. So heat issues won't be problem. Unfortunately Gearbest only has the older A118 in stock.

Does the A119 stamp with time, GPS and speed, I see there's another A119S that does that?

By default it doesn't but there is a GPS module that is purchased separately. The same is said for the A119S. The A119s has a Sony lens lens (that's what the S stands for) but according to most reviews the A119 is a better option overall. There's also an optional wiring module so that the unit can be connected directly to the vehicle.

Anyone had issues with sd cards failing (in our climate)? Is a high endurance one essential?

SD cards have a read/write limitation defined based on the quality of manufacture. Same with all types of flash memory.

With a constantly writing video, the memory cards are bound to fail eventually. Not the same as using an sdcard in your phone

I have the eagle eye, works very well, GPS is fast to lock, video quality is superb. Only gripe is I would like 1080p60. Or even 720p60. 60 FPS works wonders.

I've had the device get extremely hot before, when forgetting to put up sunshade. So hot one cannot hold it. Once it got in a bootloop due to heat, I just set it aside to cool down. Until battery died and device was cool. Plugged in and works again.

Came across this cam (Viofo A119) -

Thoughts? 1440p capacitor dashcam with GPS for around a grand. Is there anything better for the price?

Edit
GPS module/dock is around R400 more. So ~R1400 in total excluding customs.
Almost a year later and I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these xD I see the v2 is everywhere now so very low risk of getting a v1.

Has anyone here bought one from Banggood, eBay etc? What did customs come to? Trying to decide if paying the extra R500 to get it from Amazon is worth it or if I should take a chance with one of the Chinese shops.

Looking at buying two POLAROID PDE53H Car Dash Cams going for R 699 each, any reason not to go for it ?

I want to order directly from VIOFO Official Site so in theory whatever you want on there.
This will then be shipped to a local Chinese Address (Aramex Global Shopper)
Then they will ship to me - We can then plane further local shipping from there if required.

Anyone keen on ordering with me?

Have anyone tried those dash cam apps? Since most modern smart phones already have the capabilities of a dash cam, the recording capacity that might be a concern on some phones, but I don't see why it wouldn't work?

I been looking to order one for quite a while now but haven't done so yet. Which model you looking to order?

Someone is more likely to break a window to steal the phone, also not sure if the apps auto start recording like a dashcam does, and don't even think for a second that you will remember to put the recording on everytime. i wouldn't bother really.

it's just like using the phone gps function to navigate, you set up everything before you drive, and you take the phone with you when you done, it doesn't feel that difficult...

Think I will get the A119 PRO - You keen? Also got a thread going on Carbonite

The idea is that you want to forget about the Camera - If you just pop down to the Garage you won't start the camera, then you needed it.

It should auto start and stop and the day you need it, it was recording and you can pull the card to get the footage.

I have one of these.
Great so far.
Plus if you bank with FNB and you can get Cape Union/Olk Khaki vouchers on discount, it's really worth while:
