Hey guys,
It's not a major deal If I can't get the file but it would mean a few more days re-downloading.
I have tried most of the freeware data recovery apps but none of them seem to pick up the file I'm looking for. They are picking up files I deleted months ago but can't bring up that file from last night. Is it probably safe to say it has been wiped off completely.

Can anyone recommend any other software I could do a scan with.
Any help appreciated .thanks

A few days would probably imply a pretty big file. The chances of other data not overriding the deleted sectors is very slim I think. Small files are pretty easy to recover as it takes a bit of time before your operating system / file system will reallocate those sectors: For big files, sadly not.

Have a look at http://www.ntfs.com/file-recovery-concepts.htm which might help a bit.

You can easily get your hands on a copy of GetDataBack for NTFS which works very well, but as others have said if the file is that big it has most likely, at least partly, been overwritten. Had you deleted it and powered off the PC then it would be there to recover, but considering you've used the PC since that time you don't have much chance. The smaller the deleted file the easier and longer the grace period is to recover.

I recently recovered data from a drive that was not readable from the OS (Device I/O Error) using TestDisk running from an Ubuntu Live CD.
Perhaps overkill in this case though.

TestDisk is amazing ,but it can't trace from the recycle bin can it?
