Hi All,

Just a quick question to all the system administrators out there.

I have a project to code a very extensive database. I need to develop a DB for a church for member tracking etc. We have had several meetings up to now, and have pretty much settled that things should be outsourced. I have no problem with this, as I kind of suggested it.

Suddenly on wednesday the People kind of changed their mind and now want to use M$ Excel to do the Database. I am NOT happy with this for more than one reason - first being security...and so much more.

What I'm requesting is a list to quickly see your database server of choice. I need to find out whether you like access, or mysql, or mssql, I need to have a accurate survey of what's happening where.

Thanks to everyone out there, I greatly appreciate it!

Excel is not a freeking database.

/rant.

Tell those people that want to use Excel as a database, to go do their spreadsheets in Powerpoint.

Now, that I am calm again :-)

Cheapest is mySQL - free download - works very well. I have been using it in a production environment with around 500 000 transactions a month (each transaction has multiple database commands), for almost two years.

msSQL is also popular - but expensive. It has much better support for clusters, mirrors, backups (mySQL backups suck), jobs, alerts etc etc.
I do not think you need all that though.

Oh, and for the love of all things good - stay away from msACCESS.

mySQL

EDIT - poll added - let me know if you have additional options to add.

When experimenting with PHP/Apache/mySQL I found that once you get used to it then it becomes very handy and easy to set up.

My vote towards mySQL.

Actually, you get MS SQL Server 2005 Express, which is free with a filesize limit of 4GB. Your going to need A LOT of members to use up 4GB! And even then there is ways to get around it.

Even though mySQL isn't bad, MS SQL is a lot quicker to setup and configure and to use as well. Security is also quicker to setup as it has native support for NTLM aka Integrated Windows security.

Second choice is definetely mySQL

I couldn't agree more! Access is EVIL in any and all ways you can possibly imagine!

hehehe, I also like the MySQL Idea.
We can always add Postgresql on the poll, but I don't think it's that populat, but let's put it on there...

I have MySql setup on my servers already, and it's running. There is nothing that's needed to setup for this DB, just the coding and that's basically it...

Thanks in advance for the replies, it's helping me already!

Let us add "Excel" to the poll - and then Bwana can "name and shame" those who vote for it.

I have some tar here, can someone get some feathers?
