Datsun Go! Thoughts

The Datsun Redi-GO 1.0L has been launched in India at a price of between Rs. 3.57 - 3.72 lakhs (ex-Delhi).

What you'll like:

• 1.0L motor brings more power, more torque & better highway performance
• Value-for-money pricing. 23k premium over the 0.8L makes it a no-brainer choice
• Funky styling! Looks great for an entry-level hatchback
• Black interiors with high seating, decent space & a powerful air-conditioner
• 222 litre boot is more accommodating than the Alto's (177 litres)
• Suspension's behaviour is well-suited to a city hatchback. 185 mm of ground clearance too
• Warranty & service packages for up to 5 years
• Equipment in a budget car (driver's airbag, DRLs, full MID, ICE remote & more)

What you won't:

The superior Renault Kwid is priced only slightly higher
• Nothing to visually differentiate it from the 0.8L variant
• Mediocre highway manners. Best driven <100 km/h

• Body-coloured metal inside the cabin looks really bad
Missing essentials such as internally adjustable ORVMs & retractable rear seatbelts
• Cost cutting is evident in some areas (single wiper, 3 lugnut wheels, small 28L tank etc.)
• Skinny 155 mm tyres beg for an upgrade

• Nissan-Datsun's dealer & after-sales network is far weaker than that of Maruti or Hyundai

Now it looks like a Tata...

Well yes, its car is so rubbish very few people will buy them, therefore they won't be involved in too many accidents therefore safer :D

Unfortunately for a lot of people it's their only option. Seeing more and more Kwids and Gos now. At least the Kwid doesn't have the shaky exhaust.

In reality I know... and its very disturbing that these are actually allowed on our roads. Even my 17 yr old double cab is probably safer than these things.

Only cause you can drive over them and not even realise it ;-). I think a Golf MKIII would be in line with these things safety standards, but yeah it's scary how much we pay for cars, these should be R60 to R70k not R120k+

100%, Overpriced mediocrity.

That is a bit of a sweeping statement, considering the new models Tata is bringing out.

I agree, but over the years they have made the unusually high ground clearance and skinny tyres on their hatches to be their trademark, it would take a long time for me to get over that, good progress with the Bolt and other models they are building now because at 170mm of ground clearance, the Datsun seems to be class-leading both in terms of safty and ground clearance.

Datsun Go gets racy makeover for motor show

Datsun has given its Go hatchback a dose of visual excitement with the creation of the Go Live concept car that was revealed on Thursday at the Indonesian International Motor Show.

Datsun says the concept was created specifically for young Indonesians “who see customizing vehicles as a way of life,” although its appeal could certainly stretch to other markets.

No engine mods have been mentioned however, so this is clearly an aesthetic makeover only, but Datsun has at least taken that aspect quite seriously with bold new bumpers, ‘canted’ headlights, flared wheel arches housing 17-inch alloys and a huge rear wing, among other bold decorations.

The colour scheme also makes quite a statement, with bright yellow accents on the lower body and wheels and a camo-style silver paint scheme inspired by modern clothing and accessories.

“The car reflects the fun, expressive and liberating attitude that Indonesian car enthusiasts have toward their vehicles,” said Datsun design director Kei Kyu. “Jakarta is such an exciting place, and we wanted to capture the power and passion of the city with this car.”

No word on any production potential at this stage, but the concept certainly implies that Datsun might be considering some youthful new editions for its customers.

Please god no, don't bring that thing to this country... it would kill so many people. I wouldn't be able to stop myself laughing if I saw it I'm sure I would cause an accident.

Sporty. Did they put a lawnmower engine in it to give it a bit more puff than the standard one?

You need to take their word, if they say the 1.0l has more power, it seems that's how things work in Datsun land, They just say it's ahead of the rest in safety, don't specify any safety features, also say it's more powerful and don't specify exactly where the power is coming from.

The rich history is what propels the Datsun, add their aggressive marketing targeting the right people and you have a winner, come to think of it, i can't recall seeing any Tata ad on tv, is there any?

Fokol marketing for Tata; Mahindra or any Chinese vehicle brand offered locally.

Amazing how bad they are at actually marketing their own product.
