Need some advice please!! to cut a long story short, due to my current financial status:cry:v I was forced to go from fixed line internet to wireless:( my current isp is giving me nothing but grieve due to pathetic download, upload & hideous pings:( My question is will moving to 8ta be any better or should I just wait until my financial status improve & go back to fixed line.

Any positive feedback will much appreciated:)

Get a prepaid 8ta simcard and see for yourself. ADSL is always the first choice in terms of reliability and pricing when downloading/uploading large amounts of data.

Hello

I recommend waiting because 8 ta is still upgrading signals towers for better coverage and to accommodate heavier bandwidth usage.

Check to see when the 8 ta internet promotion 5 ends since there is no fixed line and dsl cost, just once off fee to buy the data sim card. Your decision to buy the modem ( usb stick) or not.

Also check if your residential area is covered by 8ta 3G.

Thanks Viva & Alvg for your input.

My area has coverage & I`m pretty close to a Telkom exchange with one freaking tall mast/tower on top of it.

All I need now is a modem & see for myself.

Hello

When buying an 8 ta data contract the sales person must check coverage for you first, so you are safe regarding coverage.

Hi guys.

A good friend of mine gave me his old Vodafone usb dongle:) but before I purchase sim card & once off data bundle I need to know if this dongle will work with 8ta???

Thanks in advance.

Chances are it will work. I stand to be corrected, but iirc very few if any modems are network locked nowadays.

Best bet is to just buy the sim card first to see if it is recognized by the modem. If it is then you can go ahead and buy the airtime and bundle. If not, well what did you lose? R1? Lol oh noes!! :D

As to whether or not 8ta will be any better depends on what you're gonna use the Internet for. If it's for browsing, 8ta won't give you any problems. I have very weak signal where I am but still get 3g coverage so I get ~3Mb down and 1Mb up on average, which is fine for browsing. For downloads, like I said download speeds should be ok depending on coverage if you got 3g but there's nothing like ADSL for downloads since you get the option of uncapped and data is much cheaper per meg. But 8ta does offer 60+60 gigs once off @ R1800 which is ok I guess. Then for gaming, well 3G is generally bad for gaming because of bad pings, but I get 60ms with 8ta local and 300ms international. Only problem is I get DC so I'd rate 8ta not so good for gaming.

Edit: Note that the above is purely from my experiences. It might and probably will be totally different for you. From what I've seen people have a lot of mixed reactions with 8ta. For example some claim they get terrible download and upload speeds with even worse pings. On the other hand you get people who swear 8ta gives them no problems with fantastic download speeds and great pings. So I guess it's kinda luck of the draw.

correct, even with my tower very far away, between a few valleys but still clearly in sight (checked app which tower im on), i get 95% signal with top download speed and no disconnections to any games, local pings are 70-110 and int are 234 to 310. not bad all and this is in durban.

best bet is to buy that sim, and do a test with pingtest and speedtest. only way you would know.
