DDR2 RAM speeds

I was told today by a guy at PC Zone that DDR2 800Mhz wouldn't work on a mobo thats made for 533Mhz, however 667Mhz would. Is this correct? I always just assumed that all speeds would work, but that they would only run at the mobo's speed.

From the Hardware and Software FAQ:

My motherboard supports DDR2-800. Can I buy faster/slower RAM or does it have to be DDR2-800?
You can buy faster and slower RAM. If you buy slower RAM (such as DDR2-667), the RAM just trudges along at it's usual speed, while if you buy the faster RAM (say DDR2-1066) it will automatically run at DDR2-800 speed.

In short, any speed DDR2 RAM should work. The PC Zone techie is incorrect.

that did make me laugh though , only one mobo could to the 800 to 533 speed change, lol, I bet that must give the guys at Asus, Gigabyte, XFX, Intel, Foxconn etc a good laugh

Hahaha! I'm not really surprised by the PC zone staff anymore. If I really want to buy something from them, I just get the name and model from them then just do my own research on it.
