So my external hard drive fell from a sub on to a tile floor twice tonight.

When turned on, it makes a few "ticking" noises every two seconds or so then a "beep" (higher-pithced "tick"?) every twenty or so.

Where can I get the stuff recovered in Cape Town? Cost?

Thanks.

P.S. Mod could move this to the Health, Wealth, Leisure and Relationships sub-forum in a while. :D

Twice, give the juice a rest:D:D, once that dreaded clicking sound starts, it's all over. Sorry to say but your data is probably lost forever:(. If it's a Seagate it might still be under warranty. (Them with their 5 year warranty and all)

Same thing happened to a 250 external of mine, dropped it and that was that....Also clicked when I turned it on, didn’t beep though...Basically you have 2 options, you could send it to someone who rebuilds hard drives (I heard they can do it for a hefty price) or throw it in the bin, nothing much you can do with a dead HD unfortunately.

I take it the drive isnt recognised at all?

Unless the data is worth many thousands of rands you might as well resign yourself that its a goner - ticking and beeping (heard that before too) are never good things to hear from a hdd. :(

Oh well. Guess it's bye-bye then.

It is still under warranty? Do I just take it to that Stor-something place in Cape Town? I've read about them doing the warranties. Do I just say it stopped working? :p

you can let me have a look at it:)
But its under warranty so you best get it replaced but if you dont want to do this please email me pics of the drive and all angles of it.I need pics of the inside to

Trying to use spinrite etc will decrease the chances of professional recovery working....so its a gamble. If you need the data back at any cost then go straight to the prof people. If not then try some data recovery tools.

If its ticking then chances are good that the DIY recovery tools won't help.

Last time the professional data recovery people asked about 3k for a clean-room style data recovery job.

It's seems those "beeps" are a form of R2D2 Language -all the drive is saying is "Drop me and I will drop You."

Thanks for the replies.

Thank goodness there wasn't important stuff on it, except for all my pictures from 1 - 5 years ago. All current stuff is on HDD in the PC.

I'm just going to hang on to it for a while until I can afford to get the data professionally recovered.

How does the warranty work? Do I have to tell a white lie? I will get it replaced after I've gotten the stuff off. :)

Just give it in and say as little as possible. I would just say that the drive is dead, here is the receipt, please replace.
