Dear reader, we're closing comments (IOL)

I will never keep quiet on censorship. This is not censorship though. You need to understand the difference to see why this is not an issue. Not even remotely.

The question is, is this a step in the direction of censorship?

I will never forget a quote i read about Zuma.He would have prefered if South Africa was run under dictatorship and he would do things differently if it were a dictatorship.

So sad, I've learned more about the realities & thought patterns of my fellow man while reading the online comments than anywhere else.

So what if it's rough & we call each other names or it's filled with trolls? How are we getting to know each other and learn to get along when we're sent to our rooms everytime someone says something funny?

Which I suspect is the ultimate aim with this; divide & conquer.
Keep them seperate so they won't find common ground.
Revolutionary 101.

What can I say, Enjoy your comments while they last.... because we're well on the road to 1-way traffic akin to China. Glad you're willing to keep silent about it, because I'm not. So you can suspect all you want - but that amounts to nothing, because the reality is very simple: I vocally detest suppression of the public voice (censorship). There is nothing more to it than that. And yes, it is a matter of mountainous concern to me, even if it's only a molehill to you. I don't deny/regret that one bit! Alas, let the fools loathe in their ignorance I suppose. The consequences will affect all of us, and they too will learn

CONTEXT. Do you know the meaning of this word? Yes, No voice. When I read an article I should be able to respond to it directly, or else there is room for controlled bias/propaganda and bigotry and similar unethical agendas. Yes, Bigotry.. isn't that Ironic? Nobody is going to find my random blog. That is the most absurd proposition I've ever heard, and only goes to show how uninformed you are about censorship and its implications. I stand by my initial comment. Here's the last letter of the word: t.

You feel that a private company should be required to publish your diatribe just because you wrote it and anything less is removing your voice?

That is 100% irrelevant. I do not contest that ToS in any way/shape/form, nor do I feel that I have I violated it in any way/shape/form. Of course mybb has the right to remove offensive/inappropriate material, but we're discussing something else here: outright censorship of comments on public news platforms, whether those news sites are privately owned or not. What does a blanket censorship policy on IOL have anything to do with the removal of isolated infringements on this site?

Again, they not censoring anything. Please get that concept into your head first. Once you have grasp that, then you will realise how funny all your posts are atm. They don't have the time and or money to clean up comments sections the whole day because of people posting shyte. So they decided to remove it completely.

Negative. This is where your reasoning is flawed. Irrespective of whether they have the time to actually moderate the comments or not, their explicit action to deny ANY and ALL form of comments ALTOGETHER has a word! It's called: Censorship.

Imagine everyone on myBB was Seriously....

He has a right to his opinion though. And his opinions are not in violation of anyone's rights or privileges. I agree with him sometimes, sometimes I don't. Doesn't make his views any less worthy.

If I run a radio show and don't set aside time for listener call-ins, is that also censorship? How about if you paint a painting and demand it be shown in the Louvre and they decline, is that censorship?

I think you have no idea what actual censorship is.

Geesus, seriously? Do I now need to get the definition for you too?

Removing ALL forms of comments isn't censorship. Removing some opposing views is. UNDERSTAND THAT!.

I disagree, there isn't much tolerance to intolerance

I havent really been here long enough.

I am also the type of person that gets over stuff very easily.

I have a thick skin in general.

In some strange way those racist comments reflected the state of the country. It reflected the reality of a minority.

I dont know about you but I hate being force fed this fake rainbow nation stuff.

The rainbow nation and the Madiba magic that the ANC was selling is now dead. I dont condone racism but also dont want to lie to myself and pretend it doesnt exist.

By the way those racist comments werent only targeted at black people. There were derogatory comments made towards white people, the afrikaans community and just showed intolerance as a whole

Just to remind everyone, this is the end game of all this nonsense.
http://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/feb/06/safe-space-or-free-speech-crisis-debate-uk-universities

The row comes amid a growing sense of crisis around debate in British universities. In recent months, Oxford University cancelled a debate on abortion because protesters objected to the fact it was being held between two men; the Cambridge Union was asked (but refused) to withdraw its speaking invitation to Germaine Greer because of her views on transgender issues; officials at London Southbank took down a “flying spaghetti monster” poster because it might cause religious offence; UCL banned the Nietzsche Club after it put up posters saying “equality is a false God”, and Dundee banned the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children from their freshers’ fair. The Sun is banned on dozens of campuses because of Page 3. Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines song has also been banned by many student unions.

No idea is above criticism.

Fitting for most sad sacks. I mean really. You believe that BS excuse?
Just wait for what's still to come. Sooner than you can imagine!

Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.

Want the hyperlink to this definition?

This is precisely what they are doing. And you are saying that it is not Censorship? In fact they are not only censoring harmful comments, they are blocking Everything! It's far WORSE than this definition

No it's not. They are a news site. Their job is to provide news. Providing a platform for people to comment was something they used to do, but they no longer want it provide said platform. That is not censorship

Not providing a platform for comment is not censorship though. Nobody with a website is obliged to offer a platform for comments

Wrong.

Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.

Want the hyperlink?

Repeat after me "A private company is under no obligation to host a comments section on their website"
