@ OP - have several copies of the death certificate certified.

You'd be surprised how many times you'll be asked for one.

Day 3

Forensics finished the autopsy but due to the time they finished and the fact that they having their staff function tomorrow - things probably won't happen tomorrow or this weekend - I'm not sure.

I had 2 people contact me telling me my mom owed them money - I was warned about this - I thought they were kidding - my mom wouldn't do that - so I politely told them to F off.

Hi all,

Okay, it's been a week and 1 day since my mom passed away and we finally coming to the end of the 'funeral' type part of this.

I went to AVBOB today.
Got my mom's death certificate, discussed that I wanted to have a silent cremation and then I'll have a memorial/wake type thing at my flat - which is exactly what my mom would've wanted - including a braai! haha.
Let the family know - friends will sort out the necessary.

My mom's AVBOB policy was for R6000, but if you have the policy for over 2 years, you get a "member discount" type deal (which I think is double the amount) - the silent cremation thing is about R9500 so I'm getting money back as well - they requested I take them a bank statement (just the first page) and have it stamped so it has my banking details etc on.

I've decided to have a little memorial thing made (Will use the AVBOB policy money back to pay for this) at the flat for my mom and gran (because their ashes will be put in the same place) which will hopefully be done tomorrow - I'll post pictures for those interested.

The documents thing is a nightmare - honestly...

We haven't even gotten to the "will" side of things but once this is sorted out, I need to see about my mom's accounts and such but to close those etc, you need the death certificate which I finally have thanks to AVBOB.

Sorry for your loss.

Heres the thing ... some people are cowboys outwardly, but inwardly, we will always miss our folks.
The best thing to do is to talk about it and get it out of your system. It helps.

My dad has been gone since 1981, mom since 1987.
I still miss them.

I take solace in the fact that they didnt die lingering deaths, and that they left me with fond memories.

Wishing you strength over the foreseeable future.

Its simple, any one who is owed money must get it from the estate. You can't actually settle the debt, it will have to be done via the lawyer handling the will.

Might not be scammers... but not your problem anyway.

Condolences, I know what you're going through as my dad died earlier this year, the estate still isn't wrapped up yet, it's a lengthy process

So yesterday I decided to start on things, went to Old Mutual to start things - what a nightmare!
First off the lady who assisted us was so "off" to us, and it made me angry, I had a colleague with me and she also picked up on it - I didn't say anything because I didn't want to embarrass her, she didn't say anything for the same reason.

I hope those who have policies and such with Old Mutual understand that to GET anything from them, it's a mission impossible (IMO) besides the start of the process being a awful experience - the rest won't be easier I'm sure.

I need to get the following now;

BI-1663 document (which I have - Got this from AVBOB)
Certified copy of death certificate
My ID
Mom's ID
I need to go and create a "estate late" account at a bank of my choice.
Goto Master of high court **
Affidavit regarding my brother

** Started here yesterday - this I forsee being another mission that will involve lawyers before I can do anything - another stress I have on my shoulders.

Today I found myself having to deal with City of Cape Town (rates related) and they were pretty helpful - nice dealing with Anneline from their call centre (086 010 3089)

HOWEVER...

Woolworths!

My mom has an account with them, something like R500 or whatever - they are so rude and it's like they don't know what they are doing.
I had about 6 different people tell me 6 different stories and it's 6 times because each time, I get cut off.
Eventually, you also get put through to their debt collections company and those people are even WORSE (no apathy at all)

So my colleague who shares my office with me took the phone out of my hand, put it down and said "lets goto a branch" so we went to Howard Centre Woolworths in Pinelands - lady there owned my situation and assisted me to a point where I at least walked out alot less ANGRY than I was when I walked in.

Woolworths Financial Services are the pits guys!
These accounts are so easy to open and yes, easy to pay, but in situations like this (death of my mother) they couldn't give a flying frack!
