My brother showed me an SMS that allegedly came from MTN today. I say allegedly because I would LIKE to believe that a company like MTN would not stoop to SMS speak to a client:

Dear Client this serves to inform u that your debit ord RD remit pmt to avoid susp Mtnsp

The message came from +2783142132438 so I am wondering if it's legitimate. Also, it's weird seeing how MTN was able to successfully debit from the credit card.

Anyone have experience with this message?

Got the same message today for 2 different contracts which are debited from 2 different accounts

Got the same, different number though. And that after all my accounts are 100% paid, although I highly suspect they are ripping me off....I am going back to Vodascum after this contract is done.

I am unfortunately stuck with them until December this year.

It's absolutely maddening. In fact, I've been wanting to leave since month 1 of the contract. Should have took notice of all those alarm bells that were screaming in the background when I signed and agreed to the 24 months of lousy service and grief.

But back to the matter at hand, I wonder if this is official MTN. Too bad we'd probably be put on hold for two hours just to get an answer.

I am holding on for the past half an hour trying to get an answer out of them.

I also got the same sms from MTN (just now), same number. My account was also successfully debited without any problems, so maybe someone at MTN pressed the wrong bulk sms button :)

The sms speak felt very unprofessional, plus I had to read it three times to figure out what it said, lol.

Just got the same SMS. I was like WTF? It was from an 084 number. I thought that it was a scam because of the poor quality of the SMS. Lol. Looks like I was wrong.

It seems that MTN call centre is melting down due to the SMS, held on for 90 minutes before I gave up. Luckily my contract ends in two months time, MTN will not see me again. 90 minutes, unacceptable.

I hope they choke on the call volumes and in reputation. I swear, they are over-billing me, then they dare send me spam like this....I think we could complain at ICASA...Everyone who has paid, I mean, it seemed almost threatening!

Got mine from an 083 number, but as I don't understand (i.e. refuse to communicate by sms-speak) what they want, I will ignore.

So no one has any official MTN word on this?

I also got it, absolutely shocking! can't wait to leave mtn.

My dad just received the same SMS from the same number as the OP. InContact doesn't agree...

Update:
Step dad and freind also got it. Who on MTN DIDN'T get it? its one thing that it went to everybody but what 16 year old typed that message?

Yes, I got it too... Clowns don't know their a55 holes from their elbows quite frankly. Although a fictitious or ill construed bulk sms is hardly a train smash one wonders what other fictitious and ill construed errors occur on the MTN network that we less lightly to know about.....???

MTN is a company that takes incompetence to a whole new level...

I just got mine - 11:50pm, don't they know when business hours are? I'm guessing someone "mistakenly" sent this out to their entire client base on debit orders?

Then I got an SMS in the middle of the night to say sorry. Fail. Don't wake up me up in the middle of the night because of your mistake.

I also got the sms. Thank goodness I had my phone on silent last night as they sent an apology (via sms again).
Vodacom and Cell C must really be enjoying all MTN's stuff ups.
