Hi All

My employer has decided to give me R500/pm to have ADSL installed at home. The last time I had internet installed at home was in 1999 and I was running at a blistering pace of 56kbps.

I know the difference between capped and uncapped; shaped and unshapped. What I need to know is which ISP will give me the most unshapped international Gigs and decent service?

I will use my internet for the following. Downloading, Gaming , , , , , oh yeah and working.

I had a look on another website and saw that I could get 5gb shaped for R239 p/m which comes to R515.20 on FastDSL (includes line rental etc).

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Morné (newbie)

i would say,,, use the whole 500 bucks....and just add in the extra to make up for a 4 meg dsl. you get 3 gigs international,, plus the local is a bonus. then just buy urself the unshaped pre-paid from axxess when you need it...that way you can have a 4 meg line still under 300 bucks..or you can just get a 512Kbps and not pay anything

oh yes and dont forget to apply rout sentry

Maybe go for prepaid, that way you can spend money on unshaped for gaming and a another account with cheaper prices for shaped for downloads and work related activities.

I would get a 4MB ADSL line from Teklom.
Then phone Teklom ISP and add the 1GB teklom account, which gives you 10GB of local-only.

And then use seperate NON-EXPIRING AXXESS Unshaped / Semi-Shaped as required, and I would definitely use a router that can run in dual mode (Like the one teklom hands out), so that I could use routesentry as I please to switch accounts freely.

Teklom 4mb line : 413.00 ( http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/adsl.html )
Teklom Line Rental : 120.00 or something .. too lazy to look it up, but .. i'm just going to assume that you already have a teklom phone (kekekeke).
Teklom Internet All Access : R 79.00 (1GB then 10GB Local Only)
Then ... R70 per GB as you need it from AXXESS prepaid (never expires) [ http://www.axxess.co.za/prepaid.php ]

WOOT!

Go for Telkom so you can get the local package only and then use it for alot of fun stuff ;)

Can someone pls tell me what you can use 10GB of local bandwidth for?!?!?!? I wish I could use it!

WOOT!

if you are in the Gauteng area you could get an unshaped WiMAX connection from Screamer at R42? for 3 Gigs and they provision it at whatever speed you want.

If I was you I would go directly to Mweb, R499 you get a 4MB Line and a 1 gig cap, plus 10 gig local, and you can boost int at anytime R99 per gig. Best value for money as far as I am concerened :) Woot!

I went to MWeb's website to see if Blaze 786 was correct or just pushing for free advertising, and ... i freaking hate flash websites . Here is what I found out:

According to : http://www.mweb.co.za/productsservi...ernetAccessADSLPricing/tabid/142/Default.aspx

You still have to pay teklom for the telephone line rental (That R120 i mentioned above).
BUT - MWeb do throw in a FREE VoIP modem ... I tried to work out what on earth a VOIP modem is, but it seems that MWeb have decided not to tell me what that is. I suspect that they may be offering a free ADSL modem, you never know.

So, my route vs the MWeb route:
Teklom : R 413 ( 4MB/s ADSL Line ) + R 79.00 (1GB then 10GB Local Only) = R492 + Once off ADSL Modem cost (R360 -> R1200).
MWeb : R 499 ( 4MB/s ADSL Line + 1GB then 10GB Local Only) + A free VOIP Modem + Bizzare and tricky terms and conditions and only one connection allowed at a time = R499.

Choices choices ...
