Decisions, decisions

I agree about the CRT tv's.

Response time is far better than LCD or Plasma, and last many many years longer.

Get a 32" or bigger widescreen CRT tv (with built-in DVB digital tuner) and you'll be set for many years while they fumble about with HD and all their promises. We'll have terrestrial dvb digital long before HD IMHO.

When HD finally comes, go get the latest panel screen, with the latest technology at a cheaper price.

Remember, a "5 year" lifespan is based on:
The LCD being on for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The general lifespan of a good quality LCD is 60,000 hours. This equates to (taking the above timeframes) 6 - 7 years. However, this lifespan is also dependant on the lifespan of components, like the globe / bulbs for the LCD display. This, according to some references, is the more determining factor in terms of lifespan.

So if you watch TV for only 4 hours a day (6 - 10pm), the LCD should last you well over 15 years. By that time (hopefully), +30" LCD's will be so cheap; you could just run to the store and grab a new one, without selling your car.

I'm really not liking the idea of buying a TV set for a small truck load of money, knowing that it has an extremely limited lifespan. I've had my current 74cm CRT for bout 10 years and it's going strong. Who knows how much longer it will last, but I'm guessing it could go another 10.

I just don't like paying that much money for something I know will be dead in 5 to 8 years. Paying R 15 000.00 to R 20 000.00 for something that can not cook me a meal, clean my house, service my car, get me to work and back, or even mow the lawn...nope don't think so. Leave that to those who have money to burn, and need to keep up with the Jones's
