In the office we've got a HP 1600 Colour Laser Printer. A while ago the colour magenta has been printing really crap. If I draw a red square in a doument for example it appears faded on the outsides and bright on the inside. I have tried a new magenta toner cartridge with similar results.

I suspect the printer just needs a service. What other part in the printer could be the cause of this decrease in printing quality?

Possibly the fuser unit for that colour. Not too familiar with the 1600, but most likely the fuser. Does the status software not give you any clues. The HP's are usually pretty good at telling you what is in good condition etc.

The fact that it is only magenta leads me to believe that it is the fuser.

Another thing to try is to take the cartridge out of the printer, place in a plastic bag in case you spill toner, then shake it. This will break up any toner clumping.

it's not the toner - we use genuine hp toner.

Even genuine toner needs a shake sometimes.

even brand new toner?

i wonder why it always happens to the red toner - they must be using blood or something...

I don't think it's the toner, all red toner can't "need a shake sometimes"

The pamphlet that came with the toner used to show that one should shake the cartridge, not sure if they still do.

Try shaking it.

I've already run the cleaning routine 6/7 times. I've already shaken the toner cartridge vigorously. We only use genuine cartridges.

Is the fuser unit on the cartridge or is it within the printer itself?

Anyway, I took it to a place nearby that fixes stuff like photocopiers and printers to have a crack at it.

Final resort, use HP online support - you can call an online technician who will talk you through various tests. It's a free service.

Have you tried:

Tried all that bru. I were a computer techie (although one with only limited skills - although to be a computer techie has never been my aim) before my job as a teacher (this is also not my ideal career choice) so I know the logical route of trouble-shooting.
