Dell XPS13 9370 vs MacBook Pro

Hi,

I'm looking for a home laptop and really have a big dilemma between the two:

New Dell XPS13 9370 i7-8550U, 8Go Ram, SSD 256Go non touch screen (1400 euros);
Macbook Pro non touch bar with (and that's the big setback) SSD128Go (1500 euros).

I'm a Macbook Pro home user for 10 years+ and an office PC user.

The use is mainly videos, music, Word, simple Excel and non ressource intensive gaming (mostly strategy games).

I loved having a Mac at home and the ecosystem but the 128Gb is really a pain and the upgrade costs 200 euros which I don't really want to put.

On the other hand, I have had a pretty bad experience with a Dell Vostro a few years ago and have a feeling that PCs get outdated quicker.

I've also had a look at the Asus Zenbook and HP Spectre but the Dell seems better.

What do you reckon?

I've been a PC user all my life, but I won't blindly defend it. I'm usually open to trying out different ecosystems. I would try Apply but, they so flippen expensive and they lock you in to their ecosystem just to milk you. So, out of principle I stay away from them.

That said, if you feel you need an MacBook then go ahead, but all you're use cases point to PC, especially for gaming. I doubt multimedia and word and excel will benefit much from a MacBook.

Now moving on to the XPS: it is considered the benchmark for ultrabooks. I haven't owned a Dell product actually, but I haven't exactly heard any horror stories either. Their after sales support seems to be Ok.

If you do go the XPS route, then I'd say the issue is price. The XPS is really good, but it's got the price to go with it. Since we're talking about Windows here, the experience on the software side won't change much if get an Asus or HP.

You don't seem too concerned about price though, but I'll share my experience with my ultrabook. I have an Acer Swift 5 i5-7200U. I bought it because it was a lot cheaper than the XPS. If I had the money I would have probably would have gotten the XPS. The Acer serves me well. The build is sturdy, but the finishing it a bit on the budget side. Other than that, I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks to both of you. I definitely tend for the XPS because of the 128Gb which is almost a dealbreaker (but my Apple fanboy side still makes me confused).

Do you have the 4k touch screen or the normal one? How's the battery if you have the touchscreen?

I had the 7th Gen. 3k touch screen. Got a good 6 hours out of it.

The XPS does knock you for a bit mentally thou. As it's a 13" screen in an 11" frame. The laptop feels really small.

I've watched a lot of videos about it so I start to get used to it.

Between Spectre and XPS (although I'd only get the i5 Spectre for the same price which is why I discarded it)?

The price difference is just insane, the 9360 with half the ram, older processor and same SSD is at 35k (so 2300€) at Makro while the new one costs 1700€ with Dell France.

Wanted to say when I started reading this thread to go with as much storage as possible, 512 GB minimum especially on the MacBook as it's not upgradable later, (I'm actually not sure whether the Dell is upgradable).
Personally I'm a Mac man and I would have gone for the MBP plus, if you really have the need it's much easier to put Windows on a Mac than it is to put Mac OS on a PC. With that being said, I'm sure you will enjoy the Dell, it's a beast of a machine, a friend has a slightly older model XPS and it's still going strong after just over a year.

I received the Dell and coming from a Mac, it's surprisingly small and yet surprisingly fast and ergonomic.

At first, I feared it was dead on arrival but it was simply out of battery.
