That's the biggest problem we're facing. We're sitting with an overload of C#/Java programmers who can only write high-level (and often sloppy) code. Programmers have no idea of basic CS concepts, discrete maths (and linear algebra), common algorithms, or data structures anymore.
The other problem we're facing is that programmers no longer write code, they copy code. If I had to ask 99% of programmers to write a piece of code which multiplies two matrices, they'd have to go and copy the 5-7 lines of code it would take to write.

The ANC idiots are completely flailing when it comes to anything related to technology and software engineering. As example: maths literacy was introduced to reduce the number of people failing real maths and/or to try to make maths more approachable for all. All though this sounds like it could be a good idea; it wasn't -- the outcome has leant more to a general "dumbing down" of SA wrt technology / maths, certainly not what this country needs.
Ignoring private schools for the moment, SA kids at school gain non of the precursors for scientific, mathematical and / or logic pursuits -- which in the medium to long run is the only sustainable way for SA to pull itself out of the volatility of a economy that's so singularly focused on a dwindling mineral supply.
