I had a feeling on one tooth that fell off, so I booked an appointment by a dentist that a friend of mine suggested. I only saw the dentist two weeks later as there was no available appointments earlier. He did the feeling but my tooth was very painful so I couldn't eat on that side, it's also very sensitive to cold. I went back to him, he said let's give it a week which we did but there was no change. Two weeks later he took off that feeling and did another one with a different material, but again it's very painful. I didn't have any pain in that tooth even when the feeling was out. Nw the dentist tells me that a rooth canal treatment needs to be done to this tooth and then be crowned because I have pain there. This he said will cost R4500 for the rooth canal and another R4500 for the crown. :wtf:

Have any of you experienced something like that before? Is this normal? I would like to find out if the dentist did something wrong to my tooth?

Thanks

No dude seriously go another dentist.

Sounds seriously dodge to me, root canal plus new filling should do the trick. Root canal should not set you back more than about 1.2k for canal plus filling.

Don't ever go back to that dentist. I go to the medi cross in randburg and they are superb.

If the filling needs to be placed very close to the nerve it can damage it. I think that this usually requires a root canal treatment. I had a problem like this with one of my teeth. The nerve had apparently died as a result but I still had a lot of problems with the tooth for several months after the root canal treatment. I would shop around a bit to see if you can't get the root canal done for less though. There is a chance that you may still have pain for a while if the nerve has been badly damaged.

Sorry killa but thats not true. There are lots of places that charge different prices but R1.2 seems like a small amount. Remember it all depends on what tooth it is. Some teeth can have up to 5 canals so it depends which tooth it is. That said it is never a bad idea to shop around a bit for a better price if you can :)

I only know this zen because i have a filling in just about every tooth in my mouth and i have never in my life been charged 4.5k for root canal and a filling. Highway robbery

I know certain places charge you ridiculous amounts of money. I have always gone to the medicross and my biggest bill was my six front teeth and even that was cheap, 12k for my front teeth. This guy wants 9k for one tooth. Seems very high to me. I did pricing for my 6 front teeth and some places wanted 20-30k to do them, the denist at the medicross did it for 12k. They look incredible, i was worried when i heard the quote but when they were finished OMG was i happy :D, ok i had to walk around for a day looking like a monster haha but it was worth it.

All you ever wanted to know about root canals (and dentistry) ...
http://www.doctorspiller.com/root_canals.htm

Duuuuuude..... I couldn't finish that article :( While I fully understand that a root canal need not be painful, the idea of the procedure just makes me go all weak. Reminds me of the birthing vid they showed us in highschool. A lot of people were grossed out by the blood. Me, I nearly lost it when they shoved that huge needle into the ladies spine. 0_o

That rooth canal article is a bit rough lol...

Thanks for all the replies, all I really want to know is it normal for a tooth to be sensitive after a feeling when it wasn't before?

After a feeling possibly, after a filling (in my experience) yes.
I had around 8 veneers and another 8 teeth done with fillings, my mouth was sensitive for about 6 to 8 weeks after that.

Found the best solution is sensodyne, put some on your finger and rub into your teeth just before bed, do not rinse.

Yes i have terrible FEELINGS before i go get a FILLING at the dentist. Give it time and brush soft.

I had a root canal done at an endodontist and the esimated total cost for one tooth was R5k. So far I have only had the procedure with a permanent filling which has come to +-R2500, in a couple of months I will go back for the crown as it is not prone to breaking like a permament filling.

I went to a Dentist in Sunninghill and he charged R4.5k for the root canal and crown in 2008, at the time I thought this was cheap. Recently around January the entire crown came out so I had to get it redone, I went to Medicross in Roodepoort and they redid the crown and it cost R2k I think the best bet is to shop around, but so far impressed with medicross prices.

Thanks for all the replies. I have feelings and fillings too lol... Thanks for correcting my spelling errors. That's why I love this forum, I ask one question and get two issues resolved(dentist and spelling) :D

FK sakes I hate dentists, and teeth for that matter always giving ***** and they cost a FORTUNE to fix.

I think it is always better to look for a good dentist to keep oral problems at bay. So, if you would like to go for another dentist then it is better to search for them online and only then visit them so as to save your time and energy and thereby helping you plan your budget accordingly.

I had 2 root canals done in 2 weeks. Abscess behind my teeth caused any anesthetic injections not to work. Feeling the doc drill into my tooth was the worst pain I've ever encountered. Twice.

Lost a filling in one of my back molars a while ago. Went to the dentist a month or so later. Dentist had a look at it, then told me :

1. Root canal @ R2k
2. Pull it out @ R480.

I opted to have it pulled out - total bill was R280. Can't afford root canal, and I don't want to have one. There's always the option of fake teeth (valstande) if it comes to that.

>.<

I can relate to that. Dentist also injected me - but it didn't help. I could feel everything as she tried to get the iffy tooth out. Was so glad when it was out. Whew.

I had 8 veneers (over my molars) and several fillings done over a month (twice a week for a month).
After the 3'rd or 4'th time the novacaine would start wearing off after about 30 minutes, I would be in for a 75minute session. 30 minutes numb, 15 minutes uncomfortable, 30 minutes of horrible pain. then you know you will be back for more in a couple of days.

I was having nightmares about the dentist for months after that.
