Depression.

Perhaps because it a chemical imbalance in the brain. Its a physical illness that affects a sufferers emotions. Bit like telling a paralysed person to stop being lazy and Get up and walk

*applauds*:)
unfortunately some thick headed people still won't get it

Blame docs they hand out the meds like candy. People who Cleary aren't depressed are put on Meds. Hence that viewpoint. to the detriment of real sufferers

Absolute rubbish.

And to use the comparison you did, is absolutely disgusting.

Paralysed people have a real problem, you invent one.

Yeah I just made it up. let me guess you think CFS is all in the head too....

No, but it is suggested that it might be from human herpes.

In all these cases I need three answers :

1. Do you have an active and healthy lifestyle
2. Do you smoke
3. Are you willing to take responsiblility for your life, or do you need someone to do it for you

If you can say a resounding YES to the first one and definitely NO to the second one, we're halfway there. If the third one is a YES as well, we're 80% there.

Clearly you have no idea what clinical depression is. There's a difference between the normal blues everyone goes through and clinical depression. As Alan says it's a chemical imbalance of the brain and one of the major symptoms is thoughts of suicide. When this type of depression gets a hold of you, there's no thinking logically. No amount of healthy living is going to cure this chemical imbalance. People who suffer from this medical condition often use suicide as a way to escape. If someone tells you they think they are suffering from depression and thinking of committing suicide, please advise them to seek medical advice. You have no idea how people who suffer with this condition feel when others make light of their illness.

+1

Nowadays we find excuses for anything and everything, then just to find a kind doctor who is willing to lie to you.

The same reasons it took hundreds of years for humans to understand things like how electricity/physics/abstract maths work. Humans took a while to progress to a point where they could understand those kinds of abstract things because they were not simply "seen". They were suffering from it and most probably did not know and did other things to combat it.

Its there. Its real. If you argue that point, you're still living in the dark ages.

Fair enough, there are many people that have a few bad days and say they're "depressed" and then there are some people who genuinely need help. I haven't actually read this thread so I don't know where its going... but just looking at your ignorance got me started.

Well, I have been diagnosed with clinical depression for most of my life.

I firmly believed that lifestyle changes and mentally dealing with it was the way to go. Eventually it spiraled so far down, I figured, 'what the ****, it can't get any worse', so I tried medication.

It made difference so big, I cannot really put it into words.

Yes, people hand out those pills like candy, to people who do not need them. This is no good.

But to pretend that everyone who makes the statement 'I am depressed' must just exercise, and harden up, **** you, really, you don't know how crippling hardcore depression can be.

You are welcome to your opinion, but in light of my own personal mental health issues, you are opining from a position of complete ignorance.

Ironically its only the people who have financial, relationship, alcohol or drug issues that have these so called "chemical imbalances".

Hey doc I don't have money and I'm depressed so what do yoy think.
No its not the money problem, its the chemicals in your brain so take these pills for R100/pop and call me when you need something stronger.

Don't be duped by these con artists people.

Can you back this absurd statement up with proof of some sort?

Depression can cause some of these things, and/or exacerbate them, but to claim they every depressed person has these issues is just silly.

Depression can cause some of these things

You're saying depression leads to financial, health, drug problems etc.
I'm saying it's the other way round. You're going to struggle to find healthy, well rounded, successful individuals who want to kill themselves because because of some underlying chemical problem in the brain.

You're saying depression leads to financial, health, drug problems etc.

I am saying it can, sure.

I'm saying it's the other way round.

I don't think it's black and white. Existence is complex.

You're going to struggle to find healthy, well rounded, successful individuals who want to kill themselves because because of some underlying chemical problem in the brain.

So you say.

Who is talking about killing themselves, anyway? :wtf:

That point was in response to a poster who mentioned that clinical depression may lead thoughts of suicide.
I'm saying that its more likely an inability to deal with exterior anomaly that's causing it.

The inability to deal with 'exterior anomaly' in depressed people often stems directly from the warping effect of depression itself.

I would caution you not to blame one thing or the other - It's complex.

But to dismiss depression offhand is, frankly, daft.
