Depression.

Due to anxiety I still see my shrink.

I guess you also believe bipolar disorder is not a real diseasr.

No it isn't a disease. Everyone gets happy (manic) and sad/angry (depressive) sometimes. It's part of life, it's not a goddamn disease. What is happening in this world... Everything's a ****ing disease now. Obesity is a disease. No it isn't put the ****ing fork down.

Major depressive disorder is not the same as getting sad sometimes.

One of the DSM diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode is:

The symptoms are not better accounted for by bereavement, i.e., after the loss of a loved one, the symptoms persist for longer than 2 months or are characterized by marked functional impairment, morbid preoccupation with worthlessness, suicidal ideation, psychotic symptoms, or psychomotor retardation.

You have no ****ing idea what you're talking about.

I'd agree re: Obesity. But with everything else, you don't know jack ****

Well, whatever the case, just be glad you've never had to live with this non-disease yourself, or had to help other people with it.

I know you are incorrect, what more can I say?

The easy route would be drugs but that is the lazy route and for depression it does not cure the source. Unless there magic pills i have yet to hear about that make you super happy even though you are still very negative.

Antidepressants don't make you happy or super happy. They allow you to be the person you used to be before depression took hold of you. You still have the full range of emotions, anger, sadness, happiness, etc . You can even get irritated and annoyed, but the emotions are not deep and uncontrollable anymore. Taking the antidepressant route is not lazy...it's for those people who have tried everything and still cannot overcome their depression. As RiaX says, there are different degrees of depression , yours you say was emo depression. If you could control it without drugs, then I don't think it was as serious as major depression.

I think the only thing you qualify to be an expert on is how to act like a cretin ;)

Yes but the first treatment should be positivity thinking and ensuring the patient is confident, i have never seen a depressed positive confident person, have you?

Who offers this course/treatment of positivity thinking?

Yes there are plenty. They hide behind happy masks. Some of them are in my wards for suicide watch actually

Absolute fking BS, they do not fix your brain. Most of the time they have no idea how the anti depressant works. they think it might do this and they think it might do that. there is no drug that can fix your brain, if anything they can actually damage it if you are just unhappy, low self esteem and have no confidence.

I am not saying drugs do not help all i am saying is before the script is written the person should be confident with high self esteem and have a positive attitude but the script is always written before that that is why i said the first point of call should be ensuring those 3 things i mentioned are in check or those 3 things are being worked on before any drug is given, they say the drug will help get you there but they do not know if the person could get there without drugs because the first thing they do is give the patient drugs. it's a sick corrupt industry, bi polar and that sort of thing drugs are needed but depression you first sort out those 3 things and then see.

I was depressed and i was given drugs, never helped me, it made me worse actually. I didn't need the drugs i just needed to stop being a baby and love myself for being unique, think positively and i am drug free and the happiest i have ever been. I also thought drugs would solve it because that is the easy way but depression fort he most part is just a bunch of nonsense and people just need to get the 3 things mentioned sorted and they won't need drugs. there will be people who cannot ever be happy but then drugs will not magically repair their brains.

I wish they would treat depression different to bi polar and so on, some people can't be fixed even with drugs because they are not willing to change but this nonsense of handing out drugs first then treating is a scam, it should be treat the cause first, if that does not work try drugs. Shrinks are not for depressed people. This will sound dumb but this chick cured/helped me: I was badly depressed at one point, never like myself, i was so negative it was terrible, i thought being negative and being realistic was the same lol

I didn't need expensive shrinks or drugs with side effects i just needed to watch and listen to someone who made me positive and me feel good about myself. There are plenty of channels like this and anyone who is depressed should try it out for a few months, watch the video's and listen to what the people say. She is a love coach but she basically makes you see that you are amazing and unique and watching her everyday i became positive because she has so much positive energy if you watch a video everyday you just become positive without forcing it.

As she says if you say i am sad you will be sad, if you tell yourself you are ugly you will be. If you say i am negative it's just who i am then obviously that is what you will be but no you must take drugs first to fix your brain when you can simply change your way of thinking and become what you think. You are what you think you are and others will think it as well because you will portray it. Naaaa that is a bunch of crap, here is a script for some drugs it will fix your brain so you can be normal again meanwhile it does more damage to your brain and you become addicted to a drug when all you needed was a change in your thought process.

I don't think most depressed people have anything wrong with their brain, they are depressed because they make themselves depressed by telling themselves that are depressed and sad, poor me. Dress well, and get your thought process on the right track and you won't need nasty addictive drugs that most doctors cannot explain precisely how they work but they worked with some test patients so now it's the first way to treat depression and then the drug actually makes the person depressed or makes them more depressed and the doctor says ok let's try this one, how about that one. Wake the F up depressed people, drugs are not the answer to your issues, your mind is and how you control your mind will determine whether you are depressed or happy. For most people, i cannot say for certainty that ever depressed person has a perfectly fine brain.

Riax bro i never knew pharmacies had wards, where is this ward could i come check it out please i want to see a positive depressed person. Is it in jhb? How could they be positive if they are depressed? You feel down but positive? You feel sad and positive hmmm, positive people want to commit suicide, how can that be? I want to die!!!! everything is good look at the beautiful sky, hand me my gun please. Makes no sense.

Most obese people have thyroid problems, yea does that sound like the truth? no you change your habits and won't be obese but there will be a few who do have a thyroid problem but claiming thyroid issues is easier than admitting the real reason, i am sure there was a drug released recently to help with obesity because eating well and exercise is not going to work. A drug will.

Killa, dude - Half of what you say people should just change with an attitude adjustment are major symptoms of the depression itself....

*edit*

I get that this worked for you, and it's something any human being (depressed or not) should works towards, but for a severely depressed person, this is utterly nonsensical advice, as you are essentially saying 'just stop being depressed by thinking yourself out of it'.

I have been impressed with your restraint with some of the moronic comments that have been posted. Ignorance is not only bliss but seems to be a sporadic result of a happy mind....;)

But as for Kdoob, I think he is partaking of two rather significant fails here. One, that just because he "cured" himself does not mean it is the one and only solution for everyone. And the second being (as you have pointed out) that he fails to see that it is a problem of the mind, and therefore the mind cannot just will itself out of this condition. I.E. The potential cure cannot happen because it is the "sickness" in itself.

Imagine the worst ****ing thing that you could ever imagine happening to you. Imagine trying to go on with your life, being positive, being a husband and dad, being a productive member of society, while still dealing with the ****ing memories. Imagine 6 years down the line you suddenly realise that for some reason you can't ****ing do it anymore, you suddenly realise that you're unhappy and you don't know why you're unhappy. You convince yourself that the only way to escape those memories is to kill yourself.

You have no ****ing clue about major depression. No amount of positive thinking is going to remove those memories. His PTSD somehow evolved into depression and FYI the treatment for PTSD are antidepressants and therapy...I don't consider my husband weak or lazy for taking antidepressants. The other family member I mentioned who had depression was also involved in this traumatic incident, stopped taking antidepressants after a course of six months and this year tried to commit suicide.

I apologise for my language. The only time I use the F- word is when I'm frustrated explaining something to someone who's too narrow minded to get it.

I am always impressed at Copa's restraint :)

Lol. Yeah. I have little. I suffer fools badly, it has been said. And I have no issue with you letting rip. Well done; some people do not understand the devastation an illness of the mind can cause. Seems they only think there is something wrong with you if you have a metal implement jutting out from your skull :)

@ killa

its not that we dont know how they work its just to complex to tell you how they work. When psychiatrists consult me I dont go and say "no we dont know how it works" lol where did you get that idea from?

You wont find easy to get information WRT to medical aspects on the brain. That information is contained in very detailed (and very expensive mind you, costing up to $4000 each) textbooks. The internet doesnt have all the information and no drug company is going to publish this complex mode of action in a leaflet for the lay person its a waste of paper.

When the drug companies launch their stuff they dont stand infront of the conference going "oh we not sure how the brain works its theoretical" ect. They dont mean theoretical as the sense you taking it in but the scientific definition of theoretical is:

A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. If enough evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, it moves to the next step—known as a theory—in the scientific method and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon.

You are talking utter nonsense because you cant understand how a disease that cannot be touched or seen can be a pathology. Its quite common actually, also a big problem for those who suffer from depression when their parents/guardians have this dangerous philosophy at home.

You havent seen the shifts and stability in moods and people taking quietiapine (seroquel®) for example. Ive had patients bring presents to the medical staff that treated them after they have been successfully treated. To be at the mercy of one's own mind is no joke nor is it a minor thing that can be overcome with simple positive attitude. The problem you have is that you cant understand how the mind dominates these people because you dominate your own mind, you can have a positive outlook and you dont seem to understand that major depression alot of the patients dont have that luxury, they simply CANNOT do that.

what you are doing is the same as asking a paraplegic to stand, but since you cant see the illness or signs of the illness (like a wheel chair) you believe its non existant.
