Hi Guys

It is now 2:46 am on Sunday morning and the net is basically unusable. It is slower than most weekdays! I have ping times of over 100,000 ms on international gaming sites, and an ‘http’ speed of only 38 kbits/s. Last month this time I had a ping time of under 500 ms and a speed of over 300 kbits/s. I think the problem is, as Merlin described, the rapid growth without increased international bandwidth. It has come to a stage where I am now considering getting ISDN.

Have you guys also experienced this rapid deterioration?

I've given up trying to outguess Telkom. I agree, this weekend has been particularly bad and I have not been able to use ADSL for any gaming (international) whatsoever since Thursday. It is also useless to try dial-up as the weekend seems to be primetime for them.

I suppose it's due to the caps being reset on Friday. All and sundry are now busy hitting their Kazaa and getting as many downloads as possible.

Another phenomena is that Thursday was also a bad day and continued throughout the night till Friday, in fact it hasn't stopped yet.

Maybe everyone who hasn't been capped yet on Thursday jumped onto the net with all their downloads and tried to tap the last few bytes out the internet before the cap is reset on Friday.
 
I know it was useless, but I phoned the ADSL helpdesk even if it was just to vent my spleen[:(!]

The person who took my call, Rose, confirmed that there is a problem on the international link on ADSL and it has been escalated to executive management. I got the impression that this has been done on Thursday already.

My speed test right now, 10:41 03 August 2003, was 13kbits/second and my international browsing is timing out.

I'm getting to the point where the emotions are running so high that I may even consider illegal actions[}:)]

I phoned East Coast the other day about their, what seemed then, attractive offer for a permanent ADSL connection without caps.

What I was told, is that you basically dial into a VPN, you will then connect through a 64k diginet line to the internet. All of this, for only R1,500 per month!!

R1,500, for that, I could buy another 7 accounts, 21gb!!

Does anyone think that is an attractive offer, is am I just expecting too much from this country?

I am very glad to have found this site. At least now I know I am not alone in this Telkom-money-making-joke. My speed tested right now at 8.7 kbits/sec. I am sure this is not what I paid for. Regarding the 3G cap - my view is that it is unacceptable. IF they have to cap us, at least cap at 6 or 10G per month or only cap usage during peek time. Secondly, this nonsense of port priority must be corrected. I have not been informed about this at any stage prior to me becoming an ADSL user and I therefor think Telkom has no right to do it. I bought ADSL with the sole idea of using it for video/audio conference and now I must find out that those ports are at the lowest of low priority.. making it almost impossible to use. Any dail-up is better than ADSL.

I am also at wits end. I contacted all the newspapers, consumer councils, tv shows and radio stations I could find. I am not certain whether there will be any investigation from their side, but I am building up a database of all addresses and they will hear from me again. If you guys are interested I will post these on the forum for you to use. I also contacted all the Telkom contacts again. How to get them to surface is another issue…maybe a personal lawsuit against them incompetence and misleading the public :-)

I am also considering legal action. Telkom is still happily signing on new members while the service is suffering badly. They obviously make profit from every new signing while they don’t spend much on upgrading the system. My concern is that they will simply continue this trend until the service is completely unusable. Users will have to migrate to ISDN or sat where they will again make a profit on installation charges and subscriptions. I will fight this! They already told me previously that they will not refund anything, and I am certain they anticipate this exact scenario.

Maybe beter that this Forum communicate with press in a central manner, and not by everybody. If all of us have adresses of the press etc, and we send them mails individually, they may just ignore us all. As a united front we may be more effective (what do you think).

Is it possible to post your letters to Telkom and the media on the site? This may help us to form an idea of how the offensive can be taken...

Point taken. One would not like to get on the wrong foot with the media. I think mass mailing Telkom, on the other hand, is a good idea. They might just start taking notice of this forum and users!
