Deutsche Post to launch WhatsApp competitor

Why are people so concerned with the privacy of their instant messengers? There are hundreds of millions of WhatsApp users, and over a dozen other popular IM applications. Unless you routinely chat about bombing places and maybe get flagged by some automated system that may or may not exist, chances of anyone spying on you must be infinitesimally small. And even if someone were to read your messages, they'd get bored after a few minutes and move on.

In any case, government agencies probably assume that the nefarious types stick to secure communication platforms and focus their spying efforts there.

Business people realised that spying by government agencies can negatively affect their business if there are leaks to competitors. VPN communication is not always possible, sending passwords over voice call or Email is a pure suicide. Smartphone secure messenger has a future for secure communication.

Precisely. Paranoid.

Anyway, way too late. WhatsApp is perfect for me.

Communication isn't currently a problem for businesses. There are loads of professional software solutions available. Instant messaging isn't anywhere near the top of the priority list anyway as there are more professional means of textual communication.

Of course there are solution (including secure voice communication), but it is not easy to setup and cost to maintain. Messaging is a simple solution, available to everybody without IT infrastructure. It is also available all the time (even your company servers are down), so even you have better solutions, it can be used for backup as well.

If a company can't afford decent IT infrastructure then it's not big enough to worry about secret government agencies leaking confidential info to its competitors.

Well, not true, but this kind of discussion is pointless.

That Telegram app does the same thing no? And you dont have to pay to have your messages deleted from the server after delivery?

It's excellent. Moved over to Telegram about a year ago and really much more convenient than Whatsapp.
Having the PC app for when you're at your desk instead of having to constantly pick up your phone & have notification noises is >>>> Whatsapp.

Also dragging and dropping documents/music/videos/pics-directly-from-a-website to a channel / person is great.

PS. When Telegram deletes pictures/text from the "Secret chat", it doesn't delete the Cache folder. So if you're going to send or receive dodgy pics from your skelmpie on the side, just remember that you'll have to clear out the /Android/org.telegram.../Cache folder.

I'm agreeing with you. Using an IM for confidential business is silly.

Too little, too late

Deutsche Post comes late to the game and hasn't been paying attention to the current competition. The app provides nothing new and less than others: There's no iPad app, each installation requires its own account (so no message sharing between iPhones and / or iPads), no Forward Secrecy. In other words: no reason to install this.
