Diagnose ADHD

So uh, yea... ADHD. I'm 19 and have been pretty sure of it for a while. It's now affecting my job and University. I stay in Gauteng Alberton. What is the cheapest way to get a diagnosis and prescription for something to help?

SWIM has gotten Ritalin a couple times and it worked wonders for them.

I don't earn much, I don't have medical aid and I have no family to pay for anything - it's me and that's it so I really needs to be stingy with money. Psychiatrists are EXTREMELY expensive, there must be a cheaper way. I just want a cheap way to get a legitimate prescription at the end of the day. If I wanted to abuse the pills like a lot of students do, then I would just use the sources every university student knows about and I wouldn't be posting on a public forum.

Please help.

I use marijuana as a substitute. Sometimes I overdo it.

I used to do that and it got me through school with some pretty impressive results. But now with juggling a job and university where my career would be ruined with any sort of police record, I cannot risk being caught or sleep half the day like I used to. I need a sustainable and risk-less solution
 
Then I'm guessing you'd have to first see a GP ...at a state hospital seeing as you don't have medical aid. The GP may or may not then recommend you see some sort of specialist (like a psychiatrist) who will then possibly prescribe this medication you seek. You might get lucky and the GP themselves will just write a script for you.

I don't understand want you want from the myBB community.
Only a doctor can legally prescribe medication for you so you need to go to a doctor.
If you can't afford a private doctor then go to a state hospital and speak to a doctor there.

It's the most active forum in SA and that is the only reason I chose it. I am hoping someone else has been through this situation or similar and has some advice. To be honest, I'm grasping at straws hoping some solution surfaces. Calling any state hospital is like speaking to anyone in government: a waste of time and energy, a brick wall knows more.

I am glad there is a chance. I have quoted several psychiatrists and I cannot afford that route.

Does anyone know which is the best public hospital in or around Alberton?

Rock up very early at the hospital. Join the queue. Start there I guess :/

I was really hoping you wouldn't say that... My busiest times at work are before lunch. I'm at work now and I really don't want to miss a day. Guess I don't have a choice.

There's one in Alrode. I've been in there once before, the blood and needles on the floor was slightly off putting... I just want to know if that is the best or if there is a better option.

Unfortunately that's how they seem to work. Alternatively find the cash to see a private GP but that could become an expensive exercise for you.

I really can't go to a private GP - I would just spend R400 minimum to be told to go to a 2k psychiatrist...

Ah, thanks for the advice. Pure ignorance coupled with the fact that you know nothing about me, what more could I ask for?

My mother left when I was 12, my father arrested when I was 16 after he mentally and physically abused my sister and I due to alcohol. Was stealing at 13 to feed my sister and I. I moved in with my gran when I was 14 to get away from my father. Started repairing computers at 15 to earn money, most of which my gran took for alcohol, but I hid some of it. Was kicked out once I matriculated (school almost held my certificate due to unpaid school fees, luckily my principle had a heart) when I got accepted to UP, asked her to pay for food for me as a student loan doesn't cover it and she told me to go **** myself and leave. Bought my first car at 17 with my own cash which my gran sold because it was in her name "for insurance purposes." Bounced between friends until I got a job. Now, at 19 (almost 20) I am studying through UNISA, have a job, renting a place, have a motorcycle and I did it all alone after being what was called "a sponging waste of air" by my gran who looked after me most of my meaningful life.

That's pretty much the outline of me. So grow up? I believe I have achieved more in my short time here than 99% of the youth in this country has. I do not drink, smoke, party or say crap like "yolo," "blom" or "brah." My sister is in some halfway house (kiddie rehab) with a grade 9 education, I could have been there. Everything I have achieved and own all came from me. Could you say you or your kids have come close to that at my age? I can't even spend time with most people my age because the absolute immaturity is so annoying that it becomes a chore.

I am simply looking to make my life easier and be able to focus. If you feel the need to ignorantly judge people you don't know, please do so on YouTube where there are many more like you.

How do you know you have ADHD?
What test did your psychiatrist perform on you?

How can you tell if you honestly do have Adults ADHD as I do have Adult ADHD!

Prove it and I will give you my psychiatrist name, he is inexpensive and will confirm your mental state!

Explain how Methylphenidate sets your state of mind!
What do you feel like doing after the second hour post ingesting the Methylphenidate?

Name any prescription drugs you have taken S5 and up and list the reaction you had to the medicine!

There is one pill you should have tried if you had performed the test so name that pill and what happened!

Another thing, after taking Methylphenidate can you fall asleep within the first 2 hours?

You are the type of **** who says cocky things on a forum but not in public.

This is serious. I went to a church who does counselling free of charge. Speak to some psychiatrist who is willing to do pro bono work.

It is a pity since most medical professionals make their career a money making scam (at Rx00 per hour) and not a responsibility to the public who subsidised them in their years of study at a government uni.

But try and contact churches or some religious organisation that actually endeavours to contribute to their society with a reasonable or free professional medical service instead ripping the ring out of it.

Also get your iron and sugar levels checked with a blood test to make sure that you are not diabetic or anaemic.

Remember that stress is a big factor in these situations. Also that the first step to dealing with such a condition is stability. Sleep, diet, exercise and managing stress are all ways to really help take control of your life.

I am above average intelligence, but ADHD and major depression have stopped from obtaining my goals. Only last year was I diagnosed with Adult ADHD.
