Diagnose ADHD

Ah, thanks for the advice. Pure ignorance coupled with the fact that you know nothing about me, what more could I ask for?

My mother left when I was 12, my father arrested when I was 16 after he mentally and physically abused my sister and I due to alcohol. Was stealing at 13 to feed my sister and I. I moved in with my gran when I was 14 to get away from my father. Started repairing computers at 15 to earn money, most of which my gran took for alcohol, but I hid some of it. Was kicked out once I matriculated (school almost held my certificate due to unpaid school fees, luckily my principle had a heart) when I got accepted to UP, asked her to pay for food for me as a student loan doesn't cover it and she told me to go **** myself and leave. Bought my first car at 17 with my own cash which my gran sold because it was in her name "for insurance purposes." Bounced between friends until I got a job. Now, at 19 (almost 20) I am studying through UNISA, have a job, renting a place, have a motorcycle and I did it all alone after being what was called "a sponging waste of air" by my gran who looked after me most of my meaningful life.

That's pretty much the outline of me. So grow up? I believe I have achieved more in my short time here than 99% of the youth in this country has. I do not drink, smoke, party or say crap like "yolo," "blom" or "brah." My sister is in some halfway house (kiddie rehab) with a grade 9 education, I could have been there. Everything I have achieved and own all came from me. Could you say you or your kids have come close to that at my age? I can't even spend time with most people my age because the absolute immaturity is so annoying that it becomes a chore.

I am simply looking to make my life easier and be able to focus. If you feel the need to ignorantly judge people you don't know, please do so on YouTube where there are many more like you.

EDIT

I must grow up? You spend your whole day just lurking these forums!! Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? Maybe YOU should think about growing up...

Well done !

The fact that you are putting yourself through school and holding down a job probably means that you don't have ADHD. The condition generally rectifies itself in adulthood and affects a small percentage of the adult population in any case. ADHD medication can be highly addictive. The last thing you would want to do is to take something you don't need.

I am no doctor, but to me it sounds like you are worrying about your future a little too much. Find something that you enjoy, be it running, building computers etc and focus on that. You seem like a level headed guy, allow yourself to enjoy life a little.

:wtf: Respect -- Hats off to you for achieving what you have so far under the circumstances.

Have you considered the possiblity that it may not be ADHD at all but that what you are experiencing is delayed onset PTSD ?

Some of the symptoms of PTSD, such as sleep or concentration problems, for example, are also seen in other anxiety disorders. So how do you know if you might have PTSD? Here are two tips that might be helpful:

Tip #1: If you have at least one symptom in each of the 3 categories, and your symptoms only started after a traumatic event, then you might have PTSD. If your anxiety symptoms were already present before the trauma, then it is probably not PTSD.

Tip #2: It is normal to feel more anxious right after a trauma. But over time, these anxious feelings will settle down. Remember: not everyone who lives through a trauma will develop PTSD. But if your symptoms have been present for over one month, and you find that they are interfering significantly in your life, then you might have PTSD.

ADHD is not disease its a personality type, I have seen a thread on this forum confirming that ADHD was a made up disease. as a person with ADHD your brain is wired differently than most people. All you need is structure and limit your distraction. limit the amount of TV you watch, delete all games from your phone.
it is also possible you have some self destructive tendencies.

LOL, if I read it on the forum it must be true, right?

@StonerStuart: You do know that Methylphenidate is not the only ADHD medication available. There is also Atomoxitine which acts in a completely different way so half of your questions prove nothing.

Hi Bonk, I know of adults that have only now been diagnosed with ADHD. When they go on medication they actually function well for the first time. One specific lady also managed many things well out of sheer will, but they can only cope for so long. She is a different person since on meds for it but the situation didn't get better just like that.

Sorry but this is just not true :). Ask someone who has ADHD, and who got help for it.

To add to this, I do not think that you want Ritalin for a day to day assist in this matter.

You need concerta IMO. It's the same chemical as ritalin, but is a slow release capsule, and thus the effects help for 8-10 hours instead of the measly 1-2 hour boost you get from ritalin.

A psych would probably recommend the same.

I've personally had prescriptions for both, but the concerta was a smoother, longer lasting effect, rather than the kick in the butt you get from ritalin. Neither were what I needed for my condition as I was incorrectly diagnosed with ADHD (and the ******* gave me anti-psychotics to use as sleeping meds, which is nuts)

That said, I don't have much advice on how to find a cost-effective, good shrink who won't give you meds that'll cause you great distress. I hope you find luck in that regard.

Also, labeling mental illnesses as "personality types" is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. It's not a disease either. It's a condition caused by neurological chemical imbalances. That is all. And it happens to many many people. More than you would probably ever even know about.

PS I'm not a psychiatrist, and my opinions only stem from what I've experienced in my pursuit for mental well-being.
Take it with a critical outlook, and do your research before taking anything that could worsen your condition.

I read the side effects of Concerta. Quite disConcerting. Was hoping to try some

I tried concerta, just for studying. You won't fall asleep or get hungry nor will you get bored you'll just study but when you get out of it, you'll be tired as hell!

@Snow I salute you, well done!

As long as you remember what you studied. . I tried Modafinil / Provigil. Just made me angry and suppressed sleep for a long time

I know a relative of mine who is affected by ADHD. To make it this far with ADHD, you must be a real fighter, OR you might not be suffering from ADHD at all. Kids who suffer from ADHD have concentration problems, poor self-esteem, short temper and at times (with improper motivation) may go haywire. A child who suffers from ADHD has to have proper motivation. Proper guidance in the child's upbringing is important.
One of the signs of ADHD is concentration problems. This also affects the child's performance at school.
You can't tell the person that he is right or wrong, nor can you shout at them (this is where they will go haywire). But you can EXPLAIN why the person is wrong.
A child with ADHD has no way of making it in life all by himself/herself. Guidance and motivation helps the person overcome their current state.
I hear that people say that retallin (hope I spelt it right) helps. BUT there are major disadvantages of it - my relative was on retallin for quiet some time and he was like a cabbage most of the time.
I highly suggest that you go and see a psychologist. That's the best advice I can give. Only a psychologist will determine if you have ADHD.

Did you get a prescription or "borrowed" some ?

Medi-Clinics have doctors that are cheaper than the rest I have found. About R250 or so. He should be able to give you a resource/appointment/introduction letter, or even a prescription. Beats hitting the line at a government clinic.

Apparently I have ADHD, I think its just a load of bull for the docs to make money, sure I do forget things from time to time and I might be busy with one thing then suddenly move to a next thing, but does that really say I have ADHD.

Edit, im not hyperactive at all, gesus im lazy.

Hey there :) you have more insight than some students of psychology. I nearly freaked out the other day when a third year student very calmly told me that Bipolar disorder is just a personality type and a choice!! My one friend would agree with you regarding the Concerta. It works as well for her as you described.
